Letter from the Editor “If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it; want to change the world... there’s nothing to it.” -- Willy Wonka
So, I reached out to Genevieve Kroeker, the world-class, award- winning chocolatier behind Seed Confections (located at 159 Ross St., St. Thomas) and together, we created something very special: the Seeds for Change chocolate bar. It’s a sesame snap base topped with toffee and coated in rich chocolate. A truly unique and delightful treat! These limited-edition bars will be sold at Seed Confections for $8 each, with 100% of proceeds going to the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank.
Two things my family and friends have come to expect to hear from me are: “I had the weirdest dream!” and, “I have an idea — let me know what you think.” Well, my friends … I’ve had an idea. Let me know what you think.
FOR AS LITTLE AS $1 P Recently, I was trying to find a way to help a local business whose owner has been struggling with her health. Naturally, that’s affected her business too. I wanted to do something meaningful, something that would lift her up, and maybe lift others too. Then it hit me: I could invest in her business. Personally, I think it’s a sweet idea — literally and figuratively. I get to support a local business doing amazing things, you get to enjoy something delicious, and together we make a meaningful difference right here in our community. Hence the name: Seeds for Change. Sow something sweet, grow something great.
A huge thank you to Gen for making this dream a reality. I hope you’ll pop into Seed Confections (open Wednesday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm) to grab a Seeds for Change bar, and while you’re there, check out her incredible macarons, chocolates, and ice cream (from her husband’s company, Decent Ice Cream). Working together, we can make a difference, one chocolate bar at a time.
Now, before you think I’ve gone full Dragon’s Den, no; I’m not buying shares. But I wanted to infuse her business with support in a way that could grow. And what do I get for my investment? Chocolate. That’s right, delicious, handmade, top-quality chocolate. But as much as I love chocolate, I didn’t want to keep it all for myself. That’s when the second idea hit. What if I sold the chocolate, and donated all the proceeds to the food bank? That way, my support of the business could multiply into something even greater. Everybody wins!
