Railway City Cycling Club by Peri Hayes Founded by avid cyclists, Andrew Buczkowski and Derek Widash, Railway, Railway City Cycling Club was incorporated on March 24th, 2016 by a group of friends with a passion for cycling together. Ross Murray became involved with the club upon moving to this community four years ago and is presently the proud President of their Board of Directors. “The club is a group of passionate cyclists who enjoy getting out for what we call ‘social riding’ together. Our mission statement is to prioritize people enjoying a nice ride in Elgin County with opportunities to stop at a café, have time to socialize and build relationships. As well, we are part of the Ontario Cycling Association and they are our governing body for regulations.” While detailing Ross’ fulfillment with the Railway City Cycling Club, he shares, “The club certainly has grown since 2016. We are most proud of having maintained our club through COVID, and have spent the last couple of years rebuilding our membership. For me, what really excites me as a cyclist is being able to connect with a great group of friends to ride with. I really enjoy the people and this club.” As Ross encourages, “We are a very diverse club, offering a variety of pace and distance to be able to meet everybody’s current riding comfortability. We currently have four rides a week.” Their rides are held on Monday evenings, Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings, with their largest attendance being on Saturday mornings. Weather pending, their season typically commences toward the end of April and completes at the end of September. Their Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the 1st of November. The Railway City Cycling Club season commences with their Spring Social in March, thereafter entailing their routine rides and special occasions -- one of which takes place every July 1st as their ‘Summertime Get Together’. “Every one of our rides is led by a Ride Host, being the appreciated club members that volunteer.” Ross offers the following invitation: “For anyone that is new to cycling, we host a ‘Try a Ride’ in May. Bring your helmet and a bike in good working order to experience riding in a group. Not only is this exercise, this club is about having fun and meeting people. We welcome those interested in coming out, and are glad to have new residents to the community who have joined as members.” Visit the railwaycitycc.com website to register if over 18 years of age, and direct inquiries about Railway City Cycling Club via email to info@railwaycitycc.com.
