Celebrating a Century of Faith: United Church of Canada Marks 100 Years at Central United The United Church of Canada (UCC) is turning 100, and St. Thomas’ Central United Church is set to host a joyful celebration to mark this historic milestone. Lori Hoffman, Secretary/Treasurer at First United Church, is coordinating the local centennial event locally and is the event lead for the anniversary service at Central United. The two churches share ministers in a collaborative ministry, and Lori says it’s an honour for Central United to play host. “What an amazing opportunity to celebrate the UCC’s past and look to the future!” says Lori. “We are honoured to be the church to host the United Church of Canada’s 100th Anniversary Cluster Service. Something like this only comes around once in a lifetime, so we are thrilled to be a part of it!” The celebration takes place on Sunday, June 8. A unique feature of the service is the livestreamed sermon, which will be broadcast from the National Centennial Worship Service happening simultaneously at Gower Street United Church in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Lori says everyone is welcome to attend. “Our celebration includes a potluck at 4 pm, special music at 5 pm, and the worship service begins at 5:30 pm. Everyone is welcome — the more the merrier!” She does ask that anyone planning to attend the potluck reach out in advance to confirm seating. The service will also feature a joint choir with singers from United Churches across the region. It will be led by Central’s Music Director, Phil Hallman, adding a powerful musical component to an already meaningful evening. Lori says she’s most excited about opening the church’s doors to the wider community for a celebration of faith, history, and shared values. “We are excited to join in celebrating this momentous occasion: the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada! We look forward to opening our doors to the community so we can all celebrate the values of the United Church of Canada together: acceptance, inclusivity, diversity, social justice and more!” The 100th Anniversary Cluster Event will be held at Central United Church, located at 135 Wellington Street, St. Thomas.
