The Summer Slide by Darlene Vreman, Library Services Coordinator: Children and Tweens Ahhh…how we all look forward to summer! Our children, especially, look forward to being free from school, vacationing with family, and spending time in the park. But there’s one slide they should try to avoid: the summer slide! What is the summer slide? The summer slide refers to the learning loss that children experience over the summer months away from school. Without regular practice, skills in reading and math can fade, making it harder for students to pick up where they left off when the new school year begins. Students can lose about two months of reading and math skills over the summer. What does this mean? Teachers will end up spending two months – 22% of the new school year – re-teaching students what they already learned the previous year. Ultimately, this can create a snowball effect that leaves some students nearly two years behind their peers. How can we prevent the summer slide? Here are some suggestions for parents: • Provide books to children at home, especially for young children • Choose books that interest children, ensuring there is a good flow to the words • Encourage children to re-read their favourite books to build confidence and comprehension • Use digital technologies like e-books and literacy-based apps

WALNUT How the St. Thomas Public Library Can Help! The library is here to support your child’s reading journey all summer long! We offer a wide selection of books, digital resources and exciting opportunities to keep kids engaged. One of the best ways to stay on track? Join the TD Summer Reading Club – it’s completely free. Every summer, we partner with TD Canada Trust to bring this amazing program to our community. Upon registration, each child receives a package with a reading log, stickers and free access to the TD Summer Reading Club website. Participants are encouraged to record their reading —whether it’s a page, a paragraph, or a whole book—and share their progress with us each time they visit the library. Each check-in earns them a ballot for our weekly prize draw! More Than Just Books! Literacy extends beyond reading. The library also offers fan- tastic programs and experiences to support: • Gross and fine motor skills • Digital literacy • Social-emotional learning Don’t Let Summer Learning Slip Away! Let St. Thomas Public Library help your family avoid the summer slide. Registration for the TD Summer Reading Club begins July 2, and you can sign up anytime throughout the summer. The earlier you register, the more chances you will have to win prizes! Make this summer one of fun, learning, and adventure — with the library by your side!
