MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS OF 2025: We’re at a destination that at times felt uncertain and distant. Think back to freshman year, when our usual wide-eyed excitement was replaced by cautious optimism. Our high school experience has been a collection of starts and stops, of plans made and plans changed, a series of beginnings that didn’t always have a clear end. Think of a time something you cared about got cancelled. There was always a fear that something we started would not be seen through till the end. But this moment is a testament to our perseverance. We learned to adapt to repeatedly unique circumstances, and continued to thrive. Hopefully what we take away is that leaving things unfinished is not a good feeling, and when it comes time to finish strong, we do. Today, we know that we didn’t let our fears get the best of us. Alan Winegarden Memorial Scholarship Alan graduated from JP Stevens in 1998. While at JP, he excelled academically and socially. Alan loved math, played tennis, and served as Student Council Treasurer, Vice-President, and President. In his short life, Alan was blessed with many close friends and a family who loved him. He loved traveling in the United States and abroad, living and working in NYC, and watching and playing sports. Alan graduated with honors from Rutgers University, where he received a BA in Math in 2002. Following college, he was thrilled to work as a financial analyst for Lehman Brothers in their investment banking division. Unfortunately, a few days after his 23 rd birthday in January 2003, Alan was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma. He faced every chemo treatment head on and showed tremendous courage. He was a fighter who never complained or said, “Why me?” Tragically, after a valiant struggle, Alan died. He will live on in all of us, his loving family. Albert & Mary DeNicola Memorial Scholarship is presented to a graduating band member who has demonstrated a love for family and music. JPS’ Band Director, Mr. DeNicola’s teaching philosophy is based on the principles and values his parents instilled in him at an early age. The student receiving this award has shown to live by those same principals. Anthony P. White Memorial Scholarship: As a graduate of Edison High School, a teacher at JP Stevens High School, and a lifelong resident, Anthony White’s ties to the community ran deep. Through his role as a teacher and coach he was able to bring the passion that he had for history, civics, and athletics to students for twenty years. He brightened the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, and students with his laughter, his wit, his intelligence, and his caring. This award goes to a student who embodies those qualities that everyone who knew and loved Mr. White remembers about him. Arthur Reiter Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of a very special member of the school community who passed away. Arty was a husband, a father, a brother, a colleague, a friend who put others’ needs before his own. Arty’s smile, unique laugh, good nature and easy manner will remain with JP Stevens and all who had the good fortune to know him. Barbara Barnes Award is given to an energetic young woman who has demonstrated intelligence and kindness, one who plans a career in teaching. Barbara Barnes taught in the Edison school system for over 35 years at Woodrow Wilson, Woodbrook, Clara Barton, and Oak Tree School. Bea Yetman Memioral Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding World Language student who exhibits the characteristics of humility, generosity and caring. These are qualities that embody the personality of Bea Yetman, the longtime World Language Supervisor and graduate of JP Stevens. Borden Family Memorial Scholarship Honors the mother and maternal grandparents of Brett Greiner, current resident and former student of Edison Township Public Schools. The scholarship is awarded to a senior with strong academic credentials, compassion for others and a serious desire to pursue a career in medicine, nursing or other field which involves the hands-on aspect of rendering medical care or assistance to other s. Bruce Lippe Memorial Award: Bruce Lippe practiced law for 37 years and was highly regarded by his clients and colleagues. He had two sons; one became a doctor the other a lawyer. In his honor, this is awarded to a student who graduated from Martin Luther King Elementary School and wishes to enter into a career either in medicine or law. Catherine DiGioia Award is given annually by the Peter Barnes Family to honor Ms. DiGioia as a favorite teacher who recently retired after 40 years of service. The recipient is a senior who demonstrates the highest degree of loyalty, dedication, and commitment to JPS. Charles J. Gorlicki Scholarship Fund: This scholarship is awarded annually by his parents and brother. A 1981 graduate, Charles attended Dartmouth College. He passed away during his senior year in college. This award is given to a well-rounded individual who excelled academically. Deborah Anes Memorial Scholarship was established by her friends to commemorate Debbie as a BOE member for over 10 years also serving on the Board of C.A.R.E. She was dedicated to helping the community and the children of Edison and was a big fan of Hawks Baseball. Dr. Anil J. Mehta Memorial Scholarship wa s established in loving memory of Dr. Anil J. Mehta, beloved pediatrician, husband, and father, who strongly believed that hard work, motivation, and a solid education are the keys to success.
Edison Twp Maintenance & Custodians Organization Adeline Bodnar Award is given to two individuals who exemplify Adeline Bodnar’s character and selflessness who are planning a career in the service industry. Fred J. Riccio Principal’s Award is awarded to an individual who exemplifies the six pillars of character. George Tyber Memorial Scholarship was established to honor a former history teacher and is presented to a graduate who demonstrates academic achievement in history and athletics. Gerald I. Bell Memorial Scholarship: Gerald I. Bell was one of the first guidance counselors at J.P. Stevens. This award is granted to a well-rounded student who has been successful in a range of academic as well as co-curricular areas. This award is sponsored by his daughter Pamela J. Kammer and his granddaughter Naomi Kammer who are both alumnae of JPS and Naomi is also an employee of the Edison Township Public Schools. Geralyn Lennon Memorial Award is given is memory by Mrs. Taryn Mateyka, her daughter. It is given to a person who has made the most out of their time in the JPS Theater Program Hautz/Caliendo Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Harry Hautz, for his background in construction, and Theodore Caliendo, for his many active years of service and volunteering. This award is presented to a “techie” in the JPS Theatre. James & Louise Cassidy Memorial Award is awarded annually to a student whose academic performance is most improved during the high school years. It is given by their son James J. who was a graduate from JPS in 1977. Janet Baio Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is given by the Pines Manor in memory of Janet’s years of service in the Community as well as being their Business Development Manager. She had more than 30 years of successful experience in the hospitality industry. Jeffrey P. Tierney Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is given in loving memory by the family of Jeffrey P. Tierney a highly respected police officer & Detective Sergeant he served and protected his hometown with pride and honor for over two decades. To anyone who knew Jeff, he was the epitome of strong character and strength, someone who would continually go above and beyond for anyone in need, and expect nothing in return. He has always been a source of hope and inspiration to everyone he encountered in his life. He would be so honored to know he was helping two young individuals as they begin the next step of their educational journey. This award is given to one graduating student athlete of the JPS wrestling team and one of the JPS softball team, who is of strong character and strength with a passion for helping others. Joanna Chmiel Memorial Scholarship A student who is a gifted artist and is also excels in science. This scholarship is in honor of our friend, daughter, and sister Joanna Marie Chmiel. She was an alumna of John P. Stevens High School, class of 2012. During her time at JP Stevens, Joanna excelled in the visual arts and the sciences, planning on a pre-med track for college. We would like to honor her memory and legacy by gifting this scholarship to a capable student who has recommendations from faculty in both visual arts and science departments. John McGowan Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to an individual who developed JP Stevens into the forward moving high school it is today. A former Guidance Director, he gave his “all” in everything he did. As a result, the football stadium is named in his honor as the Middlesex County Continuing Education Program sponsored by the county. John F. Spiess Memorial Award was established in honor of a long time employee of the Edison Department of Recreation and former varsity coach of John P. Stevens Girls’ basketball team. His award is giving to individuals who have made a significant contribution to school athletics. Jordan Bennet Lerch Creative Writing & Science Memorial Award is given annually by his family. Jordan Lerch graduated in 1996 and was attending college when he passed away. His love for writing and science has perpetuated this award. Joseph Wions Memorial Scholarship was created in his honor by his family to pay forward the kindness that the JPS Choir community showed during Joe’s illness with ALS. Keith Ayers Award for Courage is given annually by his friends and family to a student who exemplifies enthusiasm, energy and passion for life. Keith graduated from JP Stevens in 1998 and has faced adversity and overcame it.
Kevin S. Cohen Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of the 1991 graduate who worked at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He is remembered as a fine young man who loved his music. Lou Amaczi Scholarship Sponsored by Edison Moose 1978 : Lou Amaczi, a beloved Edison Moose Member served as President and on the Board of Officers for many years. An electrician by trade, always wanted to have students recognized for their hard work in these types of trades. He always said, sometimes the kids that are putting 100% of the work just cannot seem to catch a break. This scholaship honors his hope for hardworking an passionate students to be able to pursue their dreams of a career in the trades. Neha Shende Memorial Award is in memory of a 2006 graduate who tragically died in an automobile accident in December 2006. This award is presented to the student who exemplifies the qualities of academic excellence in the areas of science and world languages. Nicholas Cennamo Memorial Scholarship established to honor a 2003 graduate, by his friends and family. This award is given in his memory to a well-rounded individual who loves soccer. Peter J. Barnes Jr. Award is given to a young man who has demonstrated honor, loyalty and integrity, and is interested in pursuing a career in public service or law enforcement. Reyla Glick Memorial Award is given in memory of the former Theater/Drama instructor at JP Stevens. This is awarded to a student who has been devoted to the theater program at JP Stevens. Robert Turanicza Memorial Award Robert was a 1985 graduate of JP Stevens and worked as a custodian at both JPS and Woodbrook schools. He was also a Woodbrook graduate and he loved working with young children. Tragically, he was struck and killed in a motor vehicle accident one night on his way home from work. This award is given in his memory. Robin Cone Memorial Scholarship was established to commemorate the life of Robin Cone who lost her battle with cancer in November 2009. Robin was a 1990 graduate of JP Stevens who returned to us in 2007 to be a school counselor. She was the type of person no one will ever forget, as she had that indomitable spirit that pushed us all to succeed in life one way or another. Sree Kriti Memorial is given in memory to honor her career in liberal arts. She was a diligent and talented law student, a voracious reader, and her passion for the written word translated into her exceptional abilities as a writer. Sree was one of the warmest, most caring people you would ever meet. Stephen G. Achaves Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in memory of a former counselor and Supervisor of Guidance in the Edison schools. This award is given to a student who is involved in the school, community and in becoming a teacher. “Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.” The Steven B. Trooskin Memorial Scholarship is given in his memory to someone who exemplifies this trait with a positive attitude and perseveres in the face of adversity. Tony Simonelli Memorial Scholarship was established to honor a man committed to JP Stevens athletics, unlike anyone else. He always had a kind word and treated people with respect. Through this display of kindness, Tony made a better person out of those around him. The Virginia Fauquier Memorial Scholarship – This Scholarship honors the legacy of Virginia “Ginny” Fauquier, an esteemed member of the JPS School community since its inception in 1964. Ginny, the school’s first secretary, dedicated over 25 years to JP Stevens, fostering lasting connections and contributing to its growth. Beyond her administrative role, Ginny’s commitment to education and support for students exemplify the spirit of this scholarship. Established by her family, this scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding achievement, echoing Ginny’s belief in celebrating success and nurturing future leaders. William Corio Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given in memory of a former teacher who was involved in the Theater program at JPS. It is awarded to an outstanding senior involved in drama.
