Alan Winegarden Memorial Scholarship Alan graduated from JP Stevens in 1998. While at JP, he excelled academically and socially. Alan loved math, played tennis, and served as Student Council Treasurer, Vice-President, and President. In his short life, Alan was blessed with many close friends and a family who loved him. He loved traveling in the United States and abroad, living and working in NYC, and watching and playing sports. Alan graduated with honors from Rutgers University, where he received a BA in Math in 2002. Following college, he was thrilled to work as a financial analyst for Lehman Brothers in their investment banking division. Unfortunately, a few days after his 23 rd birthday in January 2003, Alan was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma. He faced every chemo treatment head on and showed tremendous courage. He was a fighter who never complained or said, “Why me?” Tragically, after a valiant struggle, Alan died. He will live on in all of us, his loving family. Albert & Mary DeNicola Memorial Scholarship is presented to a graduating band member who has demonstrated a love for family and music. JPS’ Band Director, Mr. DeNicola’s teaching philosophy is based on the principles and values his parents instilled in him at an early age. The student receiving this award has shown to live by those same principals. Anthony P. White Memorial Scholarship: As a graduate of Edison High School, a teacher at JP Stevens High School, and a lifelong resident, Anthony White’s ties to the community ran deep. Through his role as a teacher and coach he was able to bring the passion that he had for history, civics, and athletics to students for twenty years. He brightened the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, and students with his laughter, his wit, his intelligence, and his caring. This award goes to a student who embodies those qualities that everyone who knew and loved Mr. White remembers about him. Arthur Reiter Memorial Scholarship is given in memory of a very special member of the school community who passed away. Arty was a husband, a father, a brother, a colleague, a friend who put others’ needs before his own. Arty’s smile, unique laugh, good nature and easy manner will remain with JP Stevens and all who had the good fortune to know him. Barbara Barnes Award is given to an energetic young woman who has demonstrated intelligence and kindness, one who plans a career in teaching. Barbara Barnes taught in the Edison school system for over 35 years at Woodrow Wilson, Woodbrook, Clara Barton, and Oak Tree School. Bea Yetman Memioral Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding World Language student who exhibits the characteristics of humility, generosity and caring. These are qualities that embody the personality of Bea Yetman, the longtime World Language Supervisor and graduate of JP Stevens. Borden Family Memorial Scholarship Honors the mother and maternal grandparents of Brett Greiner, current resident and former student of Edison Township Public Schools. The scholarship is awarded to a senior with strong academic credentials, compassion for others and a serious desire to pursue a career in medicine, nursing or other field which involves the hands-on aspect of rendering medical care or assistance to other s. Bruce Lippe Memorial Award: Bruce Lippe practiced law for 37 years and was highly regarded by his clients and colleagues. He had two sons; one became a doctor the other a lawyer. In his honor, this is awarded to a student who graduated from Martin Luther King Elementary School and wishes to enter into a career either in medicine or law. Catherine DiGioia Award is given annually by the Peter Barnes Family to honor Ms. DiGioia as a favorite teacher who recently retired after 40 years of service. The recipient is a senior who demonstrates the highest degree of loyalty, dedication, and commitment to JPS. Charles J. Gorlicki Scholarship Fund: This scholarship is awarded annually by his parents and brother. A 1981 graduate, Charles attended Dartmouth College. He passed away during his senior year in college. This award is given to a well-rounded individual who excelled academically. Deborah Anes Memorial Scholarship was established by her friends to commemorate Debbie as a BOE member for over 10 years also serving on the Board of C.A.R.E. She was dedicated to helping the community and the children of Edison and was a big fan of Hawks Baseball. Dr. Anil J. Mehta Memorial Scholarship wa s established in loving memory of Dr. Anil J. Mehta, beloved pediatrician, husband, and father, who strongly believed that hard work, motivation, and a solid education are the keys to success.
