SECTION VI: SPLASH PADS A splash pad is a type of water recreation amenity with interactive fountains, ground sprayers, water cannons, tipping buckets, and other water features. Splash pads often follow a theme, contributing to the town’s aesthetics and character, creating a visually appealing space for residents and visitors to enjoy. Splash pad guidelines are outlined in Appendix A. Popularity Splash pads have become increasingly popular as an alternative to swimming pools in the past two decades due to lower cost, less management and maintenance, safety, and accessibility. The Town of Burgaw is limited on land and staff, so a splash pad, rather than a pool, is a great amenity to offer to families to help combat the summer heat. Recreation Management’s 2024 Report on the State of the Managed Recreation Industry notes that splash play areas are the top feature respondents said they plan to add to their facilities in their 2024 survey. System Types Flow-Through
In a flow through system, water is pumped directly to the splash pad and then drained into the sewer or stormwater system. This water system consistently provides fresh, clean water without the need for chemical treatment on site. Installation is simple since no underground tank needs to be installed. This
