APPENDIX E 2024 Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Master Plan Complete Survey Community Survey - Results From September 2023 to July 2024, the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Survey was distributed to the residents and visitors of Burgaw, North Carolina. The survey was available electronically and in paper form at the Town Hall facility. Two public meetings were also held on September 25 th and October 5 th 2023. All advertisement for the survey was conducted on the Town website, social media, signage, town newsletter, emails, newspaper ads, and local television stations. Information was used to gauge residents' facility needs, recreational preferences, and support for parks and recreation activities. This document outlines the findings of this survey, which are discussed and analyzed in the plan’s Needs Assessment.

Response Rate Four hundred and eighty-two (482) responses were returned representing one thousand five hundred and ninety-six (1,596) individuals. Two hundred and thirty-two (232) respondents indicated that they lived within the corporate limits of the Town, and one hundred and fifty-five (155) indicated that they did not live within the corporate limits. Ninety-five (95) individuals did not respond to these questions, leaving a total response rate of three hundred and eighty-seven (387).

Demographics Demographic information was included as part of the survey primarily to determine whether the respondents were representative of the entire community. Because there were questions regarding the spending of property taxes, respondents were also asked whether they were property owners. Around two hundred and twenty-three (223) respondents owned property within the Town of Burgaw, making up 57.62% of the response rate. The average family size per resident was around two (2) people per household. 2020 census data reports 2.4 persons per 1,078 households in Burgaw, NC. The ethnic background of survey respondents was less representative of the population, in comparison with census findings. According to the 2022 census, the town’s population was 52% Caucasian and 36% African American. However, 91.7% of survey respondents were Caucasian, and only 3.10% were African American. In both the census and the survey, the number of people of other backgrounds was small enough as to not be statistically significant. Survey responses were filtered by ethnic background to determine where responses may be affected by the undercounting of the African American population, and those
