SECTION I: HISTORY AND INTRODUCTION History of the Burgaw Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department
The Burgaw Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department was established in 2017 by the Town’s Board of Commissioners to better meet the recreation needs of the town. Prior to 2017, several parks existed in Burgaw, and the creation of the department allowed all park oversight to be consolidated. The Burgaw Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department now oversees 11 community parks, a 5.2-mile-long greenway and urban trail, and over 20 festivals, special events, and regular programs on an annual basis. The Burgaw Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department has developed the following Mission and Vision statements.
Mission: The Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department seeks to enhance the quality of life of the citizens of Burgaw by offering both active and passive recreation opportunities. The department includes a comprehensive system of parks, greenways, facilities, and open spaces that helps promote health and the enjoyment of outdoor activity in Burgaw. Vision: The Town of Burgaw envisions a system of parks and recreation facilities that: • Connects neighborhoods physically, socially, and culturally • Provides a sense of place and identification for the community • Protects, preserves, and restores significant natural areas and resources • Enables all residents to reach their potential through healthy, active, and balanced lifestyles
