BATTLING THE FLESH: WINNING THE WAR WITHIN SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 7:19 / 1 JOHN 4:4 / EPHESIANS 6:11 The Internal Battlefield Look at the fiery, dramatic landscape before us. Standing tall against a turbulent sky are three crosses on Calvary, radiant with a blazing light that cuts through the darkness. The header challenges us directly: "Battling the Flesh: Winning the War Within." Every single person walking this earth knows the reality of this war. It is an internal conflict that rages daily. Apostle Paul famously gave voice to this struggle in Romans 7:19, which is written right on this hill: "The good I would, I do not find." We want to be patient, but anger takes over. We want to live with integrity, but the "glittering call" of the world entices us. It is exhausting to fight a war where the enemy lives right inside your own skin. The Tactics of the Enemy The scriptural truths layered across this hill reveal that we are up against a coordinated spiritual attack. The enemy attacks from two fronts: The Roaring Lion: 1 Peter 5:8 warns that “a roaring lion stalks the night.” He uses fear, anxiety, and sudden temptations to intimidate us and throw us off balance. The Father of Lies: John 8:44 reminds us that he “hides truth from sight.” He whispers whispers of shame, tells you that you’ll never change, and convinces you that your secret sins define you. If we try to fight a roaring lion and a master liar using our own willpower, we will lose every time. Human resolve is no match for spiritual warfare. We cannot white- knuckle our way to internal peace. The Strategy: Armor and Abiding How do we win? Ephesians 6:11 gives us our military orders: "Put on the armor, stand and fight." Winning the war within requires active resistance. You must guard your mind—refusing to be conformed to this world, but being transformed by renewing your mind (Romans 12:2). You must recognize the lies of the enemy and immediately answer them with the truth of God’s Word. When the temptation calls, you don't argue with it; you suit up in God's righteousness, truth, and faith. The Victory at Calvary But look at where this entire battle takes place—it unfolds at the foot of the cross. The ultimate declaration stands at the very bottom: "Humanity's Light, Life, Salvation, and Victory begins and ends at Calvary's Cross." You are not fighting for victory; you are fighting from victory. The Bottom Line: The outcome of the war within has already been decided by the One who hung on the center cross. Because of Calvary, 1 John 4:4 becomes your reality: "For greater is He within your soul than all the world's might." The power of the Holy Spirit living inside you is infinitely stronger than the pull of the flesh or the traps of the devil. Stop fighting in your own strength. Run to the cross, put on your armor, and rely on the Greater Power living inside you.
