GUIDING THE NEXT GENERATION TO THE CROSS SCRIPTURE: PROVERBS 22:6 / JOSHUA 24:15 / DEUTERONOMY 6:6–7 The Path Before Us In a world filled with distracting paths—paths toward material wealth, social status, or worldly validation—this father is intentionally pausing his hard work to show his son the only path that truly matters. He is pointing him toward Calvary. Where are we directing the eyes of the next generation? The Work of a Faithful Father Notice the father's tools and clothes. He is a working man, a builder, a cultivator. He knows what it means to sweat, to till the soil, and to provide for his family's physical needs. But his posture reminds us that the greatest work a parent will ever do is not found in the fields, the office, or the bank account. The greatest work is spiritual cultivation. Proverbs 22:6 instructs us to "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Training is an active, daily investment. It means walking alongside our children, keeping our arms around them to protect them, and constantly pointing their gaze toward Jesus. It is not enough to just tell them about God; we must show them how to walk the path of faith by walking it ourselves. Like Joshua, our declaration must be, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). The Winding Road of Faith Take a close look at the path leading to the crosses. It isn't a straight, effortless highway. It is a winding, narrow dirt road that climbs uphill. Following Jesus is rarely the easiest path. The road of discipleship requires climbing. It requires perseverance, sacrifice, and swimming against the current of culture. Our children will face steep hills of doubt, peer pressure, and temptation. If we don't stand beside them on the journey—guiding their steps and anchoring them in truth—the world will gladly guide them down a different, destructive path. They need to see us navigating the uphill climbs of life with faith, prayer, and unwavering trust in God, proving to them that the destination is worth every step. Keeping the Cross in Sight Why is the cross the destination? Because everything we build on this earth will eventually pass away. The house in the valley will weather, the fields will change, but the work done at Calvary stands eternal. The Bottom Line: When we teach our children to keep their eyes fixed on the cross, we are teaching them where to find their true identity, their salvation, their forgiveness, and their ultimate purpose. We are showing them that no matter how far they wander or how difficult the road becomes, the light of the cross is always there to guide them home.
