DON’T DIE WHILE LIVING ON THE VINE SCRIPTURE FOCUS: JOHN 15:1–8
The Tragedy of the Living Dead Look at the warning before us today: "Don’t Die While Living on the Vine." It sounds like a contradiction. How can something attached to the source of life be dying? Yet, this is the quietest tragedy in the church. It is entirely possible to sit in the pews, sing the songs, and check every religious box— effectively "living on the vine" by appearance—while your heart is slowly, silently withering away inside. Proximity vs. Connection In John 15, Jesus says, "I am the true vine." He warns us that there is a massive difference between proximity and partnership. Think of a branch partially snapped by a storm. It hangs on by a thread of bark. From a distance, it looks attached. But because the internal pathways are severed, the life-giving sap cannot flow. No nutrients mean no growth, and ultimately, no fruit. Are you spiritually hanging by a thread? Going through the motions is a slow death. Jesus does not want you to just hang around Him; He demands that you abide in Him. The Purpose is Fruit, Not Survival A branch does not exist just to take up space on the trellis; it exists to bear fruit. If your prayer life has dried up, if your joy has evaporated, or if resentment has blocked your heart, you are starving. A branch cannot manufacture fruit on its own strength. It cannot white-knuckle its way into producing grapes. Fruit is the natural byproduct of an uninterrupted flow of life from the root. Let the Sap Flow You do not have to live a withered life. If the sap isn't flowing, ask the Great Gardener to clear the blockages. Cut away the distractions, drop the heavy burdens, and stop trying to do life in your own strength. Don't satisfy yourself with just being "near" Jesus. Drink deeply from Him. Let His life flow through you so completely that fruit becomes inevitable. The Bottom Line: Don’t just survive on the vine. Abide, heal, and bear fruit.
