what they were thinking. This is one of the evidences of Christ’s deity. For only God is able perfectly to read men’s hearts (Psa. 139:2). In their stubborn ness they refused the light and deter mined not to believe on Him. Evidence for the Spiritual Miracle vv. 10-12 Besides being a ministry of compas sion, the physical healing of the para lytic was for the purpose of vindicating Christ’s claim to be the Saviour of the soul as well as of the body. It was done “ that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins” (v. 10). Thus by a word from the Saviour’s lips the poor man felt new life surging through his impotent body. The result brought amazement to the beholders and glory to God. It is ever so. Whenever a soul is brought to Jesus and lifted from his fallen condition the grace of God is manifest and our Lord is glorified. Helps for the Children Jesus Meets Criticism Mark 1:40-2:17; 3:1-12 Memory Verse: (Jesus said) “ Follow me” (Mark 2:14). One day a leper came to the Saviour, knelt down before Him, and said, “ If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” Most people would never come near a leper and would never touch one who had the dread disease. The Son o f God put forth His hand and touched the leper, saying, “ I will; be thou clean.” Immediately the man was cleansed. He told everyone what had happened, so that Jesus could no more enter into the city because o f the crowds. He had to go into a quiet place; but even there the people found Him. One day as the Lord Jesus entered into a house in Capernaum, the crowds completely filled the place and the yard. Four friends came to the house carrying a man who was ill. So great were the crowds that they could not get the sick man near to Jesus. The friends climbed the stairway on the outside of the house, rembved some of the tiles from the roof, and let their friend down by ropes to the feet o f God’s Son. When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “ Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Some of the scribes who were present criticized Jesus, saying that only God could forgive sins. They re fused to believe that Jesus was God’s Son. To show His power, the Saviour not only forgave the man’s sins but healed him so that he was able to pick up his cot and carry it home, completely healed. How amazed the people were at this great miracle! As Jesus passed by the tax collector’s place of business, He saw Matthew work ing there. The Saviour said, “ Follow me,” and Matthew left all to become one of the disciples. As Jesus sat at meat in Matthew’s home, many of the religious leaders and teachers criticized Him for eating with publicans and sinners. The Saviour replied, “ I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

looks upon the heart, saw that the su preme need of this man was spiritual cleansing. Whereupon Jesus said, “ Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” It remains true today that man’s greatest need is cleansing of the heart. If men’s hearts were right everything else would be right. Opposition to the Miracle w . 6-9 Wherever a work for God is in prog ress there is sure to be definite opposi tion. The devil will see to that. It was so on this occasion. The scribes were “ reasoning in their hearts” (v. 6) con cerning the right of Jesus to forgive sin. Their opposition was apparently not audible or violent but Jesus was able to read their hearts and thus knew exactly
