And the degradation is not only about lower coral cover. The UN authors emphasize declines in habitat complexity, biodiversity, and reef-associated fauna. That matters enormously to the dive trade. A reef can still look eminently ‘divable’ to a recreational diver – or even a professional – yet, functionally, it may already have lost much of the structural complexity, species diversity, and ecological integrity that once made it exceptional. The regional examples in the chapter bring the crisis into sharper focus: in the Caribbean , the report documents one of the most dramatic long-term reef declines on Earth. Coral cover has fallen by more than 80 percent since systematic monitoring began in the 1970s, according to the studies cited in the chapter. The region was then hit again by the 2023 thermal stress event, which began earlier than usual and delivered two to three times the heat stress of previous events. In the Cayman Islands, about 80 percent of corals either bleached or showed signs of mortality, and 54 percent were dead by the final survey. Perhaps even more troubling for those of us who work in the water, the Caribbean is also un- dergoing a community shift away from major framework builders such as staghorn and elkhorn corals (Acropora) and star corals (Orbicella and Montastrea) toward more stress- tolerant corals like lettuce (Agaricia), mustard hill (Porites), and starlet corals (Siderastrea). Add the spread of stony coral
importance of local conditions, but not in a comforting way. Reefs in the Mozambique Channel and southwestern Mada- gascar are described as showing surprising resilience, while those in Kenya, Seychelles, and Tanzania have experienced severe degradation. That contrast is important for destination managers and dive professionals: local management still matters, water quality still matters, and fisheries management still matters, but resilience is uneven and can no longer be as- sumed, even within the same ocean basin. In the Pacific , the assessment carefully avoids oversimplifi- cation. Some studies show relative stability in coral cover over the past decade, while others report accelerating losses. That apparent contradiction is itself a warning. Stable cover can mask major changes in community composition and function. The chapter highlights Malaysia, where 50.7 percent of corals bleached in 2024 and 34.1 percent later died, with northeastern peninsular reefs particularly affected. It also cites the Great Barrier Reef, where a slight increase in reported hard coral cover in early 2024 was followed by the 2024-2025 bleaching event. At One Tree Reef, 80 percent of monitored coral colonies bleached, 53 percent died shortly after, and 95 percent of assessed Acropora colonies collapsed.
