ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2024-2026 ENHANCING THE CLIMATE SUSTAINABILITY OF DAIRY FORAGE PRODUCTION BY REDUCING WATER USE AND N2O EMISSIONS WITH MANURE SUBSURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION* RESEARCHER: Dr. Sarah Castle, Sustainable Conservation 2026 Project Budget: $50,000 This project investigates how improved irrigation

management can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhance resource efficiency on California dairies. By comparing control and test fields on working dairies, it aims to generate robust, science-based data that quantify environmental benefits and support future sustainability investments. PROJECT GOALS: • Validate irrigation-related GHG reduction potential, contributing to statewide climate goals. • Produce high-quality, peer-reviewed data to inform future research and industry practices. • Support development of new financial incentives and programs for dairies adopting low- emission irrigation systems. This project is majority funded and managed through grant funding awarded to Sustainable Conservation. CDRF is a minority funder of this project. CO- FUNDED
