ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2025-2026 HAND-HELD METERS TO MEASURE LAGOON WATER NITROGEN RESEARCHER: Nicholas Clark, UC ANR 2026 Project Budget: $71,223
This project evaluates the use of hand-held meters to monitor nitrogen and other water quality parameters in blended lagoon water used for forage irrigation. By providing real-time, on-farm measurements, it supports sustainable nutrient management, improves compliance with wastewater regulations, and enhances the efficiency of nitrogen applications on California dairy farms. PROJECT GOALS: • Enable real-time measurement of manure water nitrogen content, allowing for precise application rates that reduce overuse of nitrogen. • Help lower excess nitrogen runoff, mitigating impacts on water quality. • Increase adoption and successful use of hand-held meters by trained personnel, improving monitoring, reporting, and decision-making on the farm. • Support adherence to wastewater discharge regulations while enhancing crop yield and farm efficiency.
