ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2025-2026 ISOLATING NEW SPECIES OF METHANOGENS RESEARCHER: Dr. Timothy Hackmann, UC Davis 2026 Project Budget: $13,325

This project focuses on isolating and characterizing new methanogen species from the rumen of California dairy cattle. By expanding the knowledge of rumen microbiota, it provides the foundation for developing targeted, science-based methane mitigation strategies that improve environmental sustainability and support compliance with California’s SB 1383 methane reduction goals. PROJECT GOALS: • Support development of more effective mitigation strategies by understanding specific methanogen species. • Provide critical insights into the limitations of current feed additives, such as 3- nitroxypropanol (3-NOP), enabling refinement and innovation. • Make newly identified methanogen strains available in public collections, facilitating the development of novel feed additives tailored to specific rumen microbiota for improved methane reduction efficiency.
