ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2026-2027 MANURE NITROGEN MINERALIZATION EVALUATION RESEARCHER: Dr. Daniel Geisseler, UC Davis 2026 Project Budget: $27,384 The project aims to characterize how different types of dairy cattle manures release plant-available nitrogen (nitrogen mineralization) under optimal conditions. By studying corral scrapings, composted solids, lagoon manure, and anaerobic digester effluent, the project seeks to generate reliable data on nitrogen availability.

This information will then be shared with farmers, crop consultants, and regulatory staff through online tools, presentations, and articles to support better nutrient management decisions. PROJECT GOALS: • Provide detailed nitrogen mineralization curves for multiple manure types and soil conditions. • Enhance understanding of nitrogen availability from different dairy manures. • Support accurate preparation of nitrogen budgets for crops. • Improve nitrogen use efficiency and reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers. • Offer economic advantages through optimized fertilizer use. • Help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. • Generate data that can be validated in field trials, supporting broader application.
