FOOD SCIENCE, NUTRITION AND HUMAN HEALTH 2025 - 2026 YOGURT AND THE GUT MICROBIOME IN OLDER ADULTS* RESEARCHER: Dr. Jennifer Smilowitz, UC Davis 2026 Project Budget: $74,204
This project examines how regular yogurt consumption influences the gut microbiome and immune markers in adults aged 50–75. By focusing on beneficial microbes, microbial diversity, and secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA), it aims to provide science-based insights into yogurt’s role in gastrointestinal health and immunity for older adults. PROJECT GOALS: • Improve understanding of yogurt’s impact on gut microbiota, particularly in older adults who are more susceptible to gastrointestinal issues. • Inform the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, potentially influencing recommendations for dairy-based yogurt intake. • Provide preliminary data to support larger RCTs comparing dairy and non-dairy yogurt effects on gastrointestinal health. • Encourage consistent yogurt consumption, enhancing gut health and mucosal immunity, reducing risk of GI infections in older adults. • Demonstrate the potential of yogurt as a dietary intervention to support overall immune function and healthy aging. This project is 50% co-funded in partnership with National Dairy Council. CO- FUNDED
