FOOD SCIENCE, NUTRITION AND HUMAN HEALTH 2026 SIALIC ACID AND COGNITIVE HEALTH RESEARCHER: Dr. Daniela Barile, UC Davis 2026 Project Budget: $45,044
This project investigates how dietary supplementation with whey protein phospholipid concentrate (WPPC) affects brain sialic acid and other sugars in a healthy and cognitively impaired rodent model. The study aims to link WPPC intake with cognitive outcomes and establish practical tools for measuring sialic acid in dairy products and tissues. PROJECT GOALS: • Advance understanding of how dietary sialic acid influences cognitive function and myelin health. • Generate novel biomarkers and data supporting diet–brain research. • Provide validated, easy-to-use assays for measuring sialic acid in WPPC and related co-products. • Enable consistent product standardization, improving confidence in functional dairy ingredients. • Support marketing of WPPC as a functional ingredient for brain health and creates opportunities for product innovation and added economic value.
