• Same nutritional value as regular milk: A2 milk offers the same high-quality protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals as conventional milk. "It's a good source of protein and essential nutrients," says Lagrange. One cup contains about 8 grams of complete protein, meeting the FDA's standard for a "good source." • Now widely available and offered in lactose-free options: While A2 milk itself contains lactose, many brands now offer lactose-free A2 milk, making it accessible for those who need both benefits. These products use filtration or added lactase enzyme to break down the lactose.

Cons

Higher price point: A2 milk can cost about 30% more than regular milk, similar to organic milk pricing. "That's due to the time and cost of building up A2 herds and the ongoing testing required to verify the milk's composition," says Lagrange. She adds that specialized analytical techniques can cost over $100 per test, adding to production costs.

Who should try A2 milk?

If you have trouble digesting milk, and have tested negative for lactose intolerance, A2 milk may help. "There are some people who think they are lactose intolerant, but are actually sensitive to the A1 protein," Largeman-Roth says. If you're able to drink A2 milk without symptoms, that could be a sign that you're sensitive to A1 protein, not lactose.

The bottom Iine

A2 milk delivers the same nutrition as regular milk, and for some people, it may be easier to digest. It's not lactose-free unless clearly labeled as both A2 and lactose-free. And it costs more, but it could be a useful option if you're sensitive to milk and want to keep dairy out of your diet. "If you know you're not lactose intolerant, but still have issues drinking milk, give A2 milk a try," Largeman-Roth says. Lagrange agrees: no matter which option you choose, be it A2, lactose-free or conventional, all real dairy milk provides the same 13 essential nutrients.
