US Retail

The first chart you’ll see below represents the total US, while the second chart is focused on California. The columns left reflect the latest 52 weeks, progressing toward the latest 13 weeks on the far right.

Dairy continues to show solid momentum nationally, with most categories posting growth across all time periods. Cottage cheese remains the strongest growth driver both nationally and in California, with the state outpacing national gains. California also exceeds national growth in butter/blends, natural cheese, and sour cream, reflecting continued strength in core refrigerated dairy. However, performance lags in ice cream, frozen novelties, and particularly whipped toppings, where California shows steep declines versus year ago. These 13-week declines likely reflect seasonal shifts as frozen indulgence sales ease entering fall and early winter, but broader trends are driven by distribution losses and softer demand in toppings. Overall, the category remains healthy, but signs of moderation in indulgent segments suggest a return to more functional dairy consumption patterns.
