Robert Quaiff elected chairman for wardens’ caucus (EORN) on improving cellular networks in the region to both guaranteemobile broad- band service and also increase public safety for Eastern Ontario’s rural communities. That also includes promoting the needs of Eastern Ontario to the provincial govern- ment for a share of the planned $3.7 billion in new investment funding for municipal infrastructure.

and a solution to the issue of rising hydro costs, both of which handicap present and future economic development programs for Eastern Ontario. The third priority for the EOWC concerns reducing operational costs for its member municipalities, including the cost of polic- ing. The caucus will continue lobbying for modernizing the current OPP service system for rural municipalities and also the policing cost system. “The EOWC remains concerned about the increasing costs of certain services in the region,” stated Quaiff, “particularly when we think about our residents and businesses and their ability to pay.”
With a new year there’s a new face in the chairman’s seat at the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus table. Mayor Robert Quaiff of Prince Edward County was elected as the new chairman of the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus (EOWC). Quaiff’s election took place dur- ing the EOWC’s two-day annual inaugural session in Kingston, Jan. 5 and 6. Warden Bill Dobson, who holds the reeve’s post in Montague Township in Lanark County, was elected as vice-chairman for the EOWC for 2017. “Like my colleagues and the many war- dens beforeme, I amhonoured to chair the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus in 2017,” stated Quaiff in a news release, “and to ad- vocate for this year’s priorities in support of the 750,000 property taxpayers across rural Eastern Ontario. The EOWC determined on three priori- ties for its attention during the coming year. First is continuing to push for improvements to basic infrastructure throughout Eastern Ontario and also continuing expansion and improvement of broadband connections for the region, with emphasis on rural areas which still may have no reliable Internet link or are limited to dialup rather than high- speed connection. The regional wardens’ caucus will work with the Eastern Ontario Regional Network
The EOWC priority for economic growth includes lobbying for expansion of natural gas service to rural businesses, farms, and communities.The caucus is partnering with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture on this issue. Both are also arguing for more distribution capacity for hydroelectricity

Hydro workers were kept busy, soon after their NewYear’s weekend break, reconnecting villages and rural route areas back to the power grid after an early January stormknocked out power through parts of Central and Eastern Ontario. The blackout affected more than 60,000Hydro customers, includingmore than 2500 in the VankleekHill substation service area covering Prescott-Russell. Les automobilistes se dirigeant vers la maison en fin d’après- midi, mardi dernier, ont dû, dans certains cas, contourner des branches tombées des arbres sur le côté de la route. Des équipes de réparation de lignes d’autres régions de la province, n’ayant pas été touchées par la tempête du début de janvier, ont été appelées afin d’aider aux travaux de restauration.

Les récentes pluies verglaçantes et les vents violents ont laissé des parties de l’est et du centre de l’Ontario dans l’obscurité pen- dant la première semaine de janvier. Les équipes d’Hydro One ont travaillé le plus rapidement possible pour rétablir le pouvoir dans les zones urbaines et rurales comme le village de Pendleton, dans le can- ton d’Alfred-Plantagenet, avant le début du weekend du 7 janvier.
