GRATITUDE’S RIPPLE EFFECT THE CLIENTS WHO LEAVE AN EMOTIONAL LEGACY CellinoLaw.com October/November 2023 Advisor
Gratitude is good for us. We receive regular reminders of that fact every November. But while thankfulness can make us happier and healthier, we talk less frequently about our gratitude’s impact on others. Words of thanks sometimes mean more than we realize and can serve as powerful motivation.
(the cost of nursing home care). Their position was essentially that he was old and likely would not live much longer, so his pain and suffering would be limited. It’s an astoundingly coldhearted analysis, but it’s also something our attorneys regularly hear. As much as insurance companies love to accept your premiums, they hate paying claims. They’ve successfully spread misinformation about people who file fake or frivolous personal injury lawsuits. Insurance companies feel comfortable with their tactics because juries often accept them. Such unfairness only inspires us to fight harder — our work becomes as much about justice as money. A jury awarded this client $1.1 million. That couldn’t give him back what he had lost, but it ensured he could live the rest of his life in assisted living without worrying about bills. His son called me after the verdict to share how happy his father was that he could access the care he needed. Though the client is now deceased, he lived until age 94. Another case involved a much younger man who suffered catastrophic injuries as a passenger in a car accident. He will need permanent care, but the insurance company argued he did not deserve compensation for his pain and suffering. They claimed that he was so disabled that he could not understand what he had lost. How could he suffer when every day was a blank slate?
Again, it was a breathtakingly callous position. It was also false. Though the injured man could not speak, he could respond verbally to commands, and you could see him experiencing frustration with his condition. The odds were against us, but we presented the best case possible and prevailed. Actions spoke louder than words, and a jury awarded enough money to provide nursing care for the rest of his life. The young man’s father called me recently with an update on his son. During the conversation, he shared how grateful his family is to have the financial resources they need to give him the care he deserves. After all, nothing is more important to a parent than providing for their children, and it filled me with joy to hear the difference we made. Some clients even become friends. I regularly speak to another family whose son suffered tragic injuries, and I sometimes have breakfast with his father. He insists on thanking me each time we see each other. He doesn’t need to do that, but it reminds me of why I do this work. My clients' gratitude is also contagious. Hearing how we’ve affected their lives is one of the things that makes me feel the most grateful. I am incredibly blessed to help so many people overcome long odds and recover the means they need to care for themselves and their loved ones. It’s why I do what I do, and it is one of the many reasons I am thankful this Thanksgiving.
I’ve worked with countless clients over the past 35 years, but some cases never leave you. The tragedy of the circumstances often plays a role, and particularly lengthy or complex cases stand out. But the clients who share how my work impacted them are probably the most memorable. One case involved an 87-year-old gentleman who was still living independently and caring for himself when an accident changed his life. He was forced to use a wheelchair and had to move into assisted living. Though his quality of life was seriously compromised, the insurance company offered him only $50,000

From the Classroom to the Courtroom Abraham Meir’s Journey to Personal Injury Law
We all know the after-lunch slump leaves us counting the minutes to our next nap. But research shows that sleeping or lying down after eating isn’t the best for health (no matter how good it feels). When you do this, you’re not allowing your body the time it needs to digest your food properly, and you may experience various digestive issues, such as acid reflux and heartburn. So, is walking the best activity to do after eating? The answer is yes! Walking is a light movement that can help your food move through your stomach and intestines, making digestion smoother. Not only can walking help improve your digestion after eating, but this simple exercise can also bring many other benefits: Walk Your Way to Better Digestion
Abraham Meir didn’t always know he wanted to be a personal injury attorney, but he understood he wanted to help people. His immigrant parents instilled in him the importance of community early, and he wanted to dedicate himself to making others’ lives better. So, he embarked on his first career as a science teacher. However, Abraham says being an attorney “was always in the back of my head. Fighting

for what’s right is second nature to me.” So, he began attending a four-year law school program in the evenings while teaching full-time. He originally intended to go into estate planning, as it seemed like a surefire way to help people, but after securing a position at a no-fault firm, his perspective changed. “It was a natural progression into personal injury,” Abraham says. He was a volunteer EMT at the time and had seen up close the devastating injuries people can incur during an accident. Conflicts of interest meant he could not be both an EMT and a personal injury attorney, but his legal work allowed him to help the same type of accident victims in the aftermath of an emergency. “I love speaking with my clients and determining how I can help them,” Abraham says. He reports the environment at Cellino Law, which he joined a little under two years ago, is conducive to helping people get the best results. “It’s a great atmosphere here,” he says. “Everyone is great to work with and helps each other out. We all share the same goal of helping the clients as best as we can.” Outside work, he remains very involved with his community, particularly his children’s schools. He and his wife share four kids aged 8–17. “I spend a lot of time ferrying my kids back and forth between basketball and hockey games,” he says. He also stays busy with building projects in his free time. “The Home Depot is my favorite store. If my wife wants something made, I make it!” he laughs. “My clients are what keep me going,” Abraham says. “It’s always nice to help them recover from their accidents, whether sending them to the right doctor or getting them that check from their case. Money can’t buy happiness,” he concludes, “but it certainly helps.”
THE POST-MEAL WALK: WHEN AND HOW LONG IS BEST? You gain the most digestive benefits if you walk right after eating. Waiting too long afterward may only minimally aid your digestive process. Be sure to get moving as soon after your meal as possible! As for frequency, ideally, you should go for a stroll after every meal. However, to get started, try going for a walk after dinner. You can increase your number of walks as you get accustomed to the exercise. Ten minutes is all you need to reap the benefits of walking after eating. While you can walk longer if you’d like, 10 minutes is doable even with a busy schedule. Plus, if you walk for 10 minutes after every meal, that’s 30 minutes of exercise daily! Take your dog with you or stroll with your headphones, listening to your favorite podcast. How you walk is up to you, but no matter what, you’re doing your mind and body a huge favor!

BICYCLE SAFETY
And the Importance of Helmets
No matter how old you are, there’s something enjoyable about getting on your bike and riding from point A to point B. Biking offers numerous health benefits for many, but it’s also an eco-friendly mode of transportation and a fun activity to enjoy on a sunny day. That said, it’s essential to remember that safety should always be a top priority for cyclists, young or old. In New York, adhering to bicycle safety and helmet laws is crucial to protect yourself from accidents and catastrophic injuries. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bicycle accidents in the United States result in nearly 1,000 fatalities and over 130,000 injuries each year. Despite cyclists accounting for only 1% of all travelers on the roadways, they account for 2% of all motor vehicle accident fatalities. To combat this issue, New York’s bicycle safety and helmet laws have been designed to safeguard cyclists across the state. New York state law mandates anyone under 14 must wear a helmet while riding a bike as an operator or passenger. While no statewide laws require adult riders to wear helmets, municipalities within the state have the right to enforce helmet laws for cyclists over the age of 14 who live in or are visiting the area.

In addition to wearing a helmet, safe biking might look different
depending on the conditions you intend to ride in; consider affixing mirrors and a light to your bike, wearing high-visibility clothing, and mapping a route with designated bike lanes before starting your journey. Regardless of your age or experience level, these tips could help avoid severe injuries, even in the event of an accident.

Combat Stress With Mindfulness, Exercise, and Healthy Eating MIND AND BODY HARMONY:
As we enter the latter years of our adult lives, relationships, finances, careers, and retirement can cause anxiety. To eliminate stress and promote a happier and healthier life, we need to manage it to mitigate the adverse effects on our health and well-being. STAY ACTIVE: CULTIVATE A HEALTHIER MIND AND BODY. While it’s well known that working out and staying active are healthy ways to burn off steam, studies show that regular aerobic exercise works wonders for mental and cognitive health. The most important thing is to pick an activity you enjoy! PRACTICE MINDFULNESS: FIND PEACE AMIDST THE CHAOS. How do you quiet your mind when thoughts are racing? We all want to be present instead of worrying about
situations that may have happened in the past or that are yet to come. So, in the face of adversity, appreciate what is right in front of you — the past can stay in the past, and the future will be here soon enough. It’s important to remember what is essential now. NOURISH YOUR BODY: ELEVATE YOUR STRESS-FIGHTING ABILITIES. Nutrition is vital, and when we are stressed or anxious, it’s even easier to pick up a snack with little to no nutritional value and munch away. Many people find it tough to eat well when stressed, but remember that proper nutrition helps improve your body’s ability to combat stress. Life is too short to allow stress to consume you! Stay active, live in the moment, and eat nutritious foods — it will work wonders for your physical and mental health!
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, stress can often take center stage — it leaves you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, irritable, uncomfortable, and burnt out. Sometimes, stress can consume you. According to the American Medical Association, over 80% of health complications and diseases result from stress that begins in the mind and transfers to the body. The American Psychological Association reports that high stress levels can negatively impact the respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and reproductive systems of the human body.
