And the Importance of Helmets

No matter how old you are, there’s something enjoyable about getting on your bike and riding from point A to point B. Biking offers numerous health benefits for many, but it’s also an eco-friendly mode of transportation and a fun activity to enjoy on a sunny day. That said, it’s essential to remember that safety should always be a top priority for cyclists, young or old. In New York, adhering to bicycle safety and helmet laws is crucial to protect yourself from accidents and catastrophic injuries. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bicycle accidents in the United States result in nearly 1,000 fatalities and over 130,000 injuries each year. Despite cyclists accounting for only 1% of all travelers on the roadways, they account for 2% of all motor vehicle accident fatalities. To combat this issue, New York’s bicycle safety and helmet laws have been designed to safeguard cyclists across the state. New York state law mandates anyone under 14 must wear a helmet while riding a bike as an operator or passenger. While no statewide laws require adult riders to wear helmets, municipalities within the state have the right to enforce helmet laws for cyclists over the age of 14 who live in or are visiting the area.
