Gillette Cup national winner. Henry Thin, George Matthews, Franklin Barry and Aston Nijjar were all successful at the Canterbury Athletics Championships. SERVICE Although this year was significantly affected by Covid-19, the boys continued to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House. Once we were able to resume duties, most of our junior boys were able to complete two hours of service. We had a further two fundraising drives, namely for “Lynne’s Ride” and for Richard Turpie’s run. Both fundraising initiatives were led by Richard Harnett and driven by the boys, who raised large sums of money. Jono Rookes ran a drive to collect sports equipment for Tamai Sports, which was well supported by our boys and their families. I am incredibly proud of our boys as this highlights compassion, which is one of our core values at College. May we continue to grow boys and men that are renowned for leading from the heart. HOUSE DINNER The House dinner, which was hosted in the Dining Hall, was a great success, with more than 110 people enjoying excellent food and the opportunity to mingle and share fond memories of their Flower's journey together. The Rev’d Cameron Pickering was the guest speaker. He gave a wonderful message about the importance of team and paddling on the same waka together. We celebrated the successes of the year through handing out our awards and trophies and everyone present thoroughly enjoyed the company of staff, parents and boys – underlining the special culture associated with Flower's House. Thank you again to everyone in the Flower’s community for making 2022 a success. We have a great House culture, and under the student leadership of Richard Harnett and Oliver Shore – supported by the senior House leadership team of Will Pryor, Kevin Chiang and Jayden Sa, together with the talented and driven
Year 13 students – have created a community of care where each boy can feel comfortable and supported to give his best and to be himself, knowing that if he falls, he has the backing of his House to lift him right back up. We have achieved so much in 2022 and we will look back fondly on many happy memories together. This year, there were several changes with our weekend tutors. Max Goodwin and Beau Meehan both accepted fantastic career opportunities in Auckland, and William Bastings took up an incredible opportunity in Christchurch. We wish them all well and have no doubt that they will make a huge success in their chosen fields. In their place, we have welcomed Old Boy Louis Gunn and Old Boy and former Head of Flower’s William Greenslade, who have already made a positive impression on our boys. Neil Nicholson has decided to step away from boarding and we thank him for his many years of service, both as mentor and through the experience he has brought to our team, having previously served as Housemaster of Rolleston. With the opening of international borders came the news of Kale Thatcher being offered an incredible opportunity to travel and play rugby in Ireland, and with the opportunity presented in Richards, Zac Knight was promoted to the position of Deputy Housemaster of Richards House. Both men have given a lot of time and energy to Flower’s House, for which we are truly grateful. This paved the way for Benn McBrearty and Nicholas Sutcliffe to join our team. Both made an immediate impact, with Benn bringing structure, systems, and organisation, and Nick bringing energy, enthusiasm and a strong sense of connection. We look forward to enjoying the next phase of our Flower’s House journey with them. Monique Ellis-Martin continues to be a popular Deputy Housemaster, combining her roles as Head of DVC, Master-in-Charge of Polo and coach to one of the senior hockey teams, along with many other responsibilities. These include balancing being a mother and spending many hours in the House chatting to, and mentoring,
our boys, leading discussions with groups and helping steer our mentorship programme this year. She has brought creative ideas to the House and her efforts are very much appreciated. The House has once again been fortunate to have the services of our matron, Karen Adams. She helps the younger boys with their time management, chores, duties and understanding how the day-to-day systems of Flower’s House work. She is wonderful at forming connections with the boys who are fortunate to have her accompany them to their daily breakfast, ensuring that they start the day with a good conversation and that their manners are of the highest standard. We are appreciative of her efforts in Flower’s House this year. We are also indebted to our wonderful cleaners, Robyn, Colleen, Kath and Tarsh, and our seamstress Philippa. We are extremely grateful for all their efforts in ensuring the House is neat, clean and tidy, and that our boys' uniforms are in the best possible condition every day. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all the House staff. Monique, Karen, Zac, Kale, Nick and Benn have all contributed to the excellent year in our House. The boys are fantastic, but they rely on the staff to facilitate their experiences in Flower’s House. The House would not function without the time given and the patience shown by the awesome team of staff. Finally, I would like to recognise the other members of the Flower’s House community, the parents and boys. I would like to thank you all for your enduring support and efforts in 2022, and I look forward to many more happy memories with you and to our continued success in 2023.
