PASTORAL CARE Rolleston House

Thomas Currie, Tom Goodfellow, Corbin Jones, Alex Lloyd, Renzo Macdonald-Jaramillo, Arthur Mahon, Luke Menzies, Mason Ott, George Smith, Angus Turnham and Steven Zhang. The House welcomed a fantastic group of Year 9 students who formed a cohesive group right from day one. On 27 January, the 14 new Year 9 students had the opportunity to settle in and get to know each other alongside the Year 13 students for their Orientation Day. The challenge of the escape rooms at Escape Artists, a barbecue lunch and an insider's tour of College opened up the conversation, and the new Year 9 students settled in well. It was great to see everyone developing friendships, becoming part of the Rolleston community, familiarising themselves with new routines, timetables, teachers and sports teams. As the official school year commenced, the boys returned to school refreshed and happy to see everyone. Yet again, school life was modified to accommodate Covid-19 restrictions, with open windows, mask wearing indoors, online assemblies, and sports team “bubbles” but, on the whole, this just became part of the norm. Adaptability and resilience continued to be important as isolation periods meant absences were high, but the Rolleston boys went with the flow and they could be proud of the way they handled the challenges that arose and prioritised what they needed to do in order to make the most of their learning. Interhouse competition was very limited in Term 1 because of Covid-19 and the boys spent most lunchtimes around the House.

Courtyard football, cricket, and basketball, as well as table tennis in the common room upstairs, kept many boys active at morning tea and lunch, as well as a welcome break from mask wearing. On several occasions during Term 1, the Year 13 students picked up the tongs and put on a barbecue for the House, cooking about 130 sausages at a time. A streamlined system of bread and sauce along the veranda kept everyone happy and the food hot. Along with ice blocks on a hot day, coming together for food was a highlight throughout the year and the end-of-term hot chocolate mornings were a great chance to celebrate together. Athletics Day was a pared back affair with only qualifiers on Upper for the school competition. Qualifiers included George Anderson, James Bandasak, Dylan Jackson and Wil Timms in the U14 grade; Ben Beattie, Lachie Beirne, Noah Goodfellow, Henry Smith and Oliver Walker in the junior grade; Henry Ansell, Riley Diver, Max Falvey, Jack McKeown and Rico Steere in the intermediate grade; and Max Harris, Nate Herewini, Henri Murison, Mason Ott and George Smith in the senior grade. Jack McKeown came 2nd in the intermediate hammer, and 1st equal in the intermediate pole vault alongside Henry Ansell; Riley Dover came 3rd in the intermediate pole vault; George Smith came 1st in the senior 100m hurdles and 3rd in the senior 100m sprint; and Max Harris came 3rd in both the senior hammer and senior high jump. Unfortunately, the much anticipated House relays and Non-Championship events did not go ahead because of Covid-19, as was the case for the House swimming competition.
