TERM 3 AND THE DAYS START GETTING LONGER… The Rolleston boys took the very wet weather, flooding and resulting power cut in Week 1 in their stride and, as soon as the sun returned, a committed group of boys were back playing courtyard football and basketball whenever there was a break in the day. Early in the term, it was fairly quiet on the House sport front with just the junior debating competition under way. Instead, the focus was on the House Play. A sizeable cast of Rolleston boys, including nearly all the Year 9 boys, worked together to get the performance of How to Succeed in High School Without Really Trying (Jonathan Rand) ready for the big night. The play was directed by Luke Menzies and an Actor Award was presented to Max Falvey for his fantastic performance. With the biggest cast of all the Houses for the second year in a row, the House Play was another example of Rolleston’s commitment to getting involved in College life. In Term 3, our House focus was on service and we resumed visits to Spreydon School. It has been a difficult few years, with Covid-19 restrictions impacting on our visits to the school, so it was fantastic to see this relationship continue and, while limited, this will ramp up in 2023. Senior House basketball was a highlight in Term 3 with the boys really stepping up on court. In round one, Rolleston took the win against Jacobs and then dominated again in the semi-final against Corfe, putting us forward to the final against Flower's. It was a very close game and, admittedly, the team was carried a bit by the impressive skills of Hunter Adam, who scored all but two points. In the end, Rolleston took the win 21–19, which was cause for great celebration (and a pizza shout). Hunter was part of the Senior A Basketball team that sealed its place in school history as the first College team to win the New Zealand Secondary Schools National AA Championships, where he was

named Most Valuable Player – an obvious asset to the Rolleston team. Our House haka was also a success, with Rico Steere leading the rest of the House who showed full commitment and passion. While Rolleston did not take the win, their energy and enthusiasm was something to be proud of and it was a powerful performance by the boys. Rolleston boys have a love-hate relationship with the cross country, which was held on 19 September. It was a lovely afternoon in North Hagley Park and it was great to see many boys in maroon making their way around the course. The top placings in the House included Ben Beattie, who came 10th in the junior grade, and Rico Steere came 4th, followed closely by Riley Diver in 7th in the intermediate grade. In assembly in Term 3, sports awards were presented to Alex Lloyd for his success in Canterbury U18 hockey, and to Daniel Gourley for his outstanding fencing achievements. Harry Vaughan was presented a Music Certificate (with Distinction) for Grade VIII Singing, and Henri Murison was awarded his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Honours Ties were presented to Arthur Mahon for Choral Music and to Joshua Hooker for Instrumental Music, and Winter Sports Colours were presented to Alex Lloyd for Hockey and Hunter Adam for Basketball. Jago Wallace performed ‘The Truth’ with The Spuds and Luke Menzies wrapped up the term with a head shave for Shave for a Cure, raising more than $2000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ – a fantastic effort. THE END OF YEAR IS IN SIGHT… The year finished on a strong note with some impressive House futsal by the juniors, 100% effort in the tug-of-war, and enthusiastic support from the sidelines in the final weeks of House competition. Aaron Kwak spoke in the Junior Round Square assembly and was also awarded his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s

Hillary Award, while Seb Gray was acknowledged for his win in the South Island Schools Skiing Championships. This year was the first year of Nga¯ Miha Ma¯tauranga, the new College Diploma. All Year 11 boys met the criteria for Black and White level, and Adrian Chang, Brandon Lee and Seann Zhao were recognised with a Silver Award, while Saleh Ameen and Harry Vaughan were awarded Gold with Academic Honours reflecting their use of initiative and impact on the community. A great result for the boys in Year 11. The House Dinner and prize- giving on Wednesday 26 October was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the range of successes and contributions made by students, leavers and House staff, as well as being a great social occasion to mark the end of the school year. The Dining Hall looked spectacular thanks to a group of creative parents and it was a great turnout from the House community. Throughout 2022, Rolleston remained strong as a community. Humour, Teamwork and Kindness continued to be some of the top character strengths in Rolleston, and these were embedded in everything that was achieved during the year. Being part of the Rolleston House community offers a “home away from home” environment, and the relationships that form among the boys help shape their College experience. In the wise words of Tommy Williamson, “an attitude of excellence, involvement and positivity” will lead to a fantastic future for Rolleston House. Thus and perhaps better.
