CULTURE Junior Production – Rainbow’s Ending

Christ’s College and St Margaret’s College

Years 9–10 Production Written by Noël Greig

Directed by Nikki Bleyendaal 1–5 November 2022, Old Boys’ Theatre Rainbow’s Ending is a dark, modern fable about two formidable giants whose insatiable appetite is driving society towards utter devastation. Through physical theatre, story-telling and a great deal of imagination, our ensemble of young actors endeavoured to transport their audiences to another world on the brink of ruin as one brave village, led by Rainbow and her gang, tried to save the world. So, how do you even begin to stage such an open script like Rainbow’s Ending ? It began with finding this exceptional and committed cast – students who could tell stories with energy and joy, were not afraid to be silly and physically creative, were keen to work in an ensemble as well as have their moment in the spotlight, and willing to experiment boldly in rehearsal. Only 26 of the nearly 80 students who auditioned were selected to partake in this adventure, and they each made an extraordinary effort to earn their place in the company. The challenge in any piece of ensemble theatre is ensuring the cast is cohesive, collaborative and, above all, enthusiastic about the story, and everyone certainly exceeded those expectations in every performance.
