disappointing. The Berlin Trio won a place in the National Finals in Auckland at the start of August and was delighted to be awarded the coveted Helen Young National Second Place Award. The trio was praised for the phenomenal playing of a virtuosi work, fabulous ensemble skills, especially phrasing and the intonation between the strings. “You told the ‘story’ of the music beautifully and I believed every note. This was mature, assured, and engaging music-making. I loved every minute – a professional performance indeed.” COMBINED ORCHESTRA WITH ST MARGARET’S COLLEGE

The aim of 2022 was to rebuild student engagement with the

orchestra and to allow more students to enjoy the thrill of playing with like- minded instrumentalists. The Ministry of Education restrictions on brass and wind players being able to play inside meant that for Term 1 the focus was on the string players. Once we were able to combine with St Margaret’s College instrumentalists, we were able to gain momentum and work towards a very truncated orchestra festival with Rangi Ruru Girls’ School instrumentalists at the end of Term 3. A wider focus on repertoire from a more diverse range of compositional styles resulted in the students dramatically lifting their interest and ability to perform to a higher level.
