U20 BASKETBALL Manager: Sarah Davidson Coach: Quinn Clinton, Oliver Hui Team: Kevin Chiang, Jacob Clements, Ed Davidson, Santino Felitti-Duter, Fergus Johnston, William Jones, Dominic Lee, Matthew Lewis, Rob McClean, Bruno Vaughan Throughout a challenging season, the U20 team produced one of the better College performances in that grade. Winning nine games throughout the season, the team had plenty of success. This was built through great teamwork, with five players averaging 10 points a game. The team earned a semi-final spot against Gators. It was down 39–47 but showed toughness to bring the score back and win in a close finish, 91–87. Ed Davidson (17 points), Jacob Clements (16 Points), Santino Felitti- Duter (14 points), Matthew Lewis (14 points), and Fergus Johnston (10 points) all chipped in during the well- rounded team performance. In the final, the team again found itself down at half-time – this time by 10 points. However, a 20–6 third-quarter and a big comeback meant the team pushed on to victory. Matthew Lewis (25 points), Jacob Clements (18 points), and Rob McClean (11 points) all had
impressive performances in the win. Overall, it was a great season and College’s first title at U20 level. Ben Sheat MiC U17 BLACK BASKETBALL Manager: Susan Harding Coach: Rani Hammond Team: Ed Davidson (captain), Gus Eglinton, Jackson Garry, Truman Heath, Fergus Johnston, Ben Laing, Aston Nijjar, Josh Shannahan, Austin Smith, Peter Wang, George Wilson In 2022, we had the first uninterrupted basketball season since 2019 because of Covid-19, but our boys still had more than their fair share of interruptions with illness and injuries affecting our team at different stages. Despite the slow start to the season, the team grew into a well-oiled machine, improving weekly to secure a playoff spot as the 5th-best team after the round robin. The team eventually finished 7th after losing a tense final battle, 77–64, against a strong Cashmere High School. The season was successful and, as a team, we were fortunate to be supported by many people. Dev Eglinton, our liaison parent, deserves special mention, as do all the families who came to cheer for our
boys throughout the season. Susan Harding should be recognised for the time she gave the boys and the support she provided to me in my role these last three years. Finally, the leadership of Ben Sheat MiC Basketball was immense. While the team’s aspirations for the 2022 season were not fully realised, there were many signs of growth and development from this group, with most earning a playing spot in the Senior A, Senior B and Junior A teams representing College at tournament this year. This was
testament to the work of each of these young men towards developing their craft and the journey they undertook.
I look forward to seeing how they develop during the rest of their time at College. Rani Hammond Coach Echoing Rani Hammond’s sentiments regarding the boys’ development during the season, it was a privilege to watch students develop their basketball skills over four years and a unique opportunity for me in my time in Saturday basketball. It was never dull – not for one second. The boys fought every match valiantly, with great courage and stoicism, always bringing their best game. Often successful, they were gracious in the occasional defeat. Without exception, every game was exciting to watch. As I finish my career in school sporting management, I would like to especially thank Rani, not only for his excellent coaching and mentoring of the boys but also for his empathy for me as a novice in the sport. His quiet, disciplined, and strategic approach had shown the boys neffective coaching was not about shouting. Thank you also to Dev Eglinton for outstanding work as parent liaison and to the parent group who supported us so positively this season. Most of all, a sincere “merci beaucoup” to the team of 2022. Your tolerance and good-humoured patience with me
