It was a real pleasure managing the U15 Grey team. They were a great bunch of boys. They started the season well against a much bigger side and with Covid-19 and injuries to players early on, we had limited player numbers. However, this did not deter the boys and they gained confidence as the game went on. They were able to string some plays together and it was clear they would continue to improve as the season progressed. It was another tough game for the boys heading out to Kaiapoi High School again. They rallied the players they had and made a real game of it. They were beginning to gel as a team and communicate effectively with each other. This set them up well for their next game. It was good to see the boys working together as a team and moving the ball efficiently. They played hard and did not back down, playing some intense defence. Their effort paid off and they were rewarded with their first win of the season against St Thomas of Canterbury College. This lifted their spirits and they were very excited going into the next game. The boys continued their winning ways and had a great win over Christchurch Boys’ High School. It was a solid performance, with all team members working hard on the court. Michael Rankin and Louis Tapper were our top scorers and were relentless in and around the hoop. It was a well-executed performance from the team. They were talking and moving the ball well and, most importantly, they were supporting each other. Luke Hearne and Luke Edmonds were outstanding, scoring buckets from all over the court The boys had to dig deep when they came up against St Bede’s College. The score remained close throughout the match. The boys stood up and showed their determination with some solid defence and some great shooting from Archie Nijjar and Max Lye. The boys had an interesting match against Pioneer. The score was again tight throughout the match and it

was anyone’s game. Archie Nijjar worked hard on defence and attack, scoring many baskets. Charlie Raine also had a great game and was solid in the paint. Unfortunately, it was not enough and the boys went down in the dying seconds of the game. The boys closed the season with a classic U15 Grey arm wrestle. It was a very close game. Both teams were fired up and keen to end their season on a high. Archie Nijjar put his hand up and led by example and everyone was working hard on defence. Max Lye had a hot hand and kept College in the lead with some great three-point shooting. Again, it went down to the dying seconds and with grit and determination College walked away with a glorious victory and a very positive end to a great season of basketball. The boys were motivated and disciplined, never playing down to an opponent. They were determined to prove themselves and continuously worked on their games while stepping up to meet any challenge. This season, the boys learnt that no matter the opponent, we should never underestimate or overestimate the other team, and, in doing so, we would avoid mistakes and make the most of our opportunities. We had to stay focused on our game and lean into our talents. They also learnt that making mistakes was part of the game, and how we responded could make great players. The standout of the season was the improvement of James Floyd and Ben Campbell. Both very intelligent players, they just needed to develop a small piece of their game. For James, it was his confidence, and for Ben, it was his shooting. They were determined to get better and went to work, always putting in 100% and staying after practice to work. By the end of the season, they were great two-way players, making themselves an opposing coach’s nightmare. Our captain, Harry Flatman, did a great job, always showing up to practice even when he could not play. Like the rest of the squad, he had a personal goal, and that was to convert his first three pointer this season. He would shoot three pointers in practice and convert consistently, but just would not take enough in games. However, he worked hard – you could see his determination to make that three. In the last game of the season, Harry hit that first three pointer – and that was testament to the drive and determination of each player to accomplish their goals. Every game, these boys were determined to leave it all out there on the floor – all I could ask for as a coach. It was a pleasure to coach such a talented, hardworking group and I look forward to seeing how well they do next season. A big thank you to all the parents for their support and the staff who helped make this season go so smoothly.

U15 WHITE BASKETBALL Manager: Riki Clark Coach: Joshua Hilton Team: Harry Flatman (captain), Ben Campbell, Morgan Clancy, Drew Edmundson, James Floyd, Louie Garry, Max Hao, Jack Howard, Alex Johnston, Ned McCrystal, Louis McKeon, Hugo Trolove Going into this year, we had the same goal we had last season, and that was for everyone to improve on their game – whether that was shooting, finishing in traffic or defence, and also building trust and chemistry within our squad. We had a few familiar faces but most players were new to the team, meaning that we had to get to work. In training, we focused on attacking off the catch and moving the ball around. We wanted to build up everyone’s confidence so that every player was a threat to score. We went out to improve every day and with that effort came winning ways.
