Limited, who ensure that our programme is well-supported. That support is the 10% that creates the difference between College and all the other school cricket programmes in New Zealand. Archibalds continues as our main sponsor, and it supports excellence. We have proved to be two strong organisations working together to benefit our community. Our coaching programme and staff are also points of difference. We have so many, and everyone has contributed to College’s 1st XI success over the past few years. Craig Aitken ensures our Year 11 Development team members progress from Colts. Craig knows how to get the best out of the young players. Rob Noster continues to nurture the late developers, while Ryan Thomas has made social cricket trendy again at schoolboy-level with such care and technical analysis. Arthur Wood and Harry Chamberlain manage to herd 48 Year 9 students into teams each week, and give the boys a fantastic experience in their debut year of College cricket. Michael Flatman gives his heart and soul to the Colts every Saturday. Our Chaplain, Cameron Pickering, is a cricket nut and works with our Year 10 boys to ensure they have as much fun as he does, while Josh Wood spends every Saturday with the 3rd XI and continues to push the boys higher. Dayle Hadlee has spent the past five years working closely with all our bowlers every Wednesday and remains an icon of New Zealand cricket and coaching. Ryan McCone, Keryn Ambler, and Andrew Levenger have created a powerful force at 1st XI level. They have – through patience, process, and technical nous – turned the 1st XI into a team that makes us all proud. Alongside them, they have had Alistair Morgan, who turns up every Saturday to score and have fun with the boys. There has been immense change over the past five years. We started with steel nets that blew over in a strong wind and practice and playing wickets that favoured the bowlers. We have now completed all the wickets and the junior and

senior training block and a full irrigation system that will keep the CCCG grounds green and level, with our cricketers appreciating safe conditions and our batsmen enjoying wickets with bounce and carry. Our structure has also changed a lot over the past five years. We now select two Year 9 A teams where possible and keep boys in their age group in Years 9–10. We recognise that playing with friends is the reason that most boys play. We have pods at Year 9, so all boys get the opportunity to bat in different positions. This structure has proved a success, with the most important test being whether boys are still playing cricket in Year 13. Our Friends of Cricket committee and members help pave the way to delivering a high-quality programme. They include Dev Eglinton, Rachel Teen, Dave Ovendale, David Hiatt, Michael Flatman, Lucy Cochran, and Ben Huston. The loss of Jono Brent, Richard Breitmeyer and Ken Gimblett will, of course, be a big one, but with so many great people and parents involved in our programme, a new era will begin with confidence and passion. Stephen Dods MiC GILLETTE CUP CHAMPIONS Round One 13 December 2022, Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln Christ’s College 1st XI (395/9) vs Mount Albert Grammar School 1st XI, Auckland (271/9) College won by 124 runs

This proved to be a good decision and we were soon off to a flyer. Matt Lewis had all and sundry looking for balls in the garden and the many hedges that surrounded the ground after thoroughly dispatching the opening bowlers. However, he was to be undone by looking for a quick single that ballooned to mid-off. Nick Gibb came to the crease and he and Tim Seeto started their record-breaking partnership. Dayle Hadlee commented that he had very rarely seen such footwork from boys of this age. Their footwork and speed between the wickets led to a partnership of 276, a record for this competition, which started in 1990. At one point, the scoreboard read 340/1. Tim Seeto scored 160 runs in 144 balls, and we were all fortunate to witness such an innings. Tim was 12 runs off the Gillette individual record. Nick Gibb played a sublime innings and did not give the fielding team a chance until he was out, caught on the boundary for 125. Unfortunately, we could not carry the momentum provided by Tim and Nick but the boys reached 395/9, smashing the Gillette team score record by 32 runs. The bowlers came out with a clear game plan after seeing how our batters had dominated. There was a real spring in their step and an inspiring team talk from coaches Keryn Ambler and Ryan McCone. Jordan Braithwaite and Ben Breitmeyer opened and bowled a hard length without much luck. Rob McClean and Hamish Falls-Anderson dismissed both openers in two overs. Rob then secured another wicket to put the opposition under pressure. Matt Lewis came on at the northern end, running in downwind to secure the wicket of one of the Patel brothers, who was looking dangerous, with a rising bumper, caught by keeper George Ryan. Tom Harrison also came on and dismissed the other Patel brother, caught behind fishing outside off. With the score at 203/5, Matt Hocquard entered the attack and trapped their No.7 in front of the stumps for a plumb LBW just as Mt Albert was

The team arrived early and buzzing for a great day of cricket. Captain Nick Gibb won the toss and elected to bat on a used but not abused wicket.
