gaining some momentum. In his next over, Matt got his second wicket in a similar fashion. From here, the game meandered through to 271/9 and a win to College by 124 runs. Round 2 14 December 2022, Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln Hutt International Boys’ School 1st XI (158, 44.1 overs) vs Christ’s College 1st XI (159/4, 25.5 overs) College won by 6 wickets Matt Hocquard 2/25 (9.1 overs) Ben Breitmeyer 3/25 (9 overs) & 26* runs Hamish Falls-Anderson 2/44 (10 overs) Matt Lewis 2/20 (6 overs) & 54 runs Nick Gibb 57* runs Match Report It was hot and balmy at Bert Sutcliffe Oval as College entered a double header, defending the Heathcote Williams Shield and playing for Gillette Cup points. You could have carved up the tension and the boys were fizzing after a good win the previous day. After losing the toss, we were asked to field and it was felt that the conditions suited the bowlers. Keryn and Ryan opened with spinner Matt Hocquard and that seemed to throw the opposition. Ciaran Huntley then came in for his first spell of the tournament and quickly got into his work, bowling the opener with his first ball – top of off stump and we were away again. Matt Hocquard continued the momentum, bowling the other opener in the next over. Matt and Ciaran finished their spell with the opposition running at 2½ an over. An amazing spell of bowling and the batsmen had to work for every run. Ben Breitmeyer and Rob McClean continued the form shown by our openers, with Ben – at one point – being on a hat-trick. Hutt International had a key batsman and he held its innings together before going out in the 35th over for 70 runs. At one stage, the opposition looked as though it might get to 250. The rest of the batsmen dug in but scored very slowly, the team was all out for 158 in

the 44th over. It took an ice bath to cool the boys down, such was the heat. We quickly got Tim Seeto sorted as he was still a bit sore from the previous day. However he was caught behind in the first over. Matt Lewis put us all at ease again as he started to punish the opposition bowlers and again the gardens took a hammering. He was eventually bowled for 54 off 24 balls, having taken the pressure off the team. Nick Gibb then held the innings together with a solid 57* and couple of nice cameos from Harry Sharr (18) and Ben Breitmeyer with 26 from 18. Round 3 15 December 2022, Lincoln No. 3, Lincoln Christ’s College 1st XI (265/5) vs Napier Boys’ High School 1st XI (240, 48.4 overs) College won by 25 runs

Harry Sharr 38 Ben Breitmeyer 4/59 (10 overs) Tom Harrison 2/23 (6 overs) Match Report It was a threatening day at Lincoln. The opposition coach asked if the rain would settle in and I said “No it hardly ever rains in Lincoln” – and so it proved. The boys arrived a bit tired, but another stirring speech by Keryn and Ryan had them fully tuned in. Nick won another toss and elected to bat. The pitch was not a road but looked capable of throwing out 300 runs. Napier started with a leg spinner, and Matt Lewis being the non-striker who loved new ball spin was hankering to get amongst it – the issue being that a run had to be on offer before getting to the other end. He was run out without facing a ball. For the first time in this tournament, the College team were under real pressure as Napier bowled fantastic line and length. Unfortunately, Nick Gibb, our rock, then went out stumped for 8. Ollie Shore came to the crease and seemed in good form. We all knew that Ollie was ready to go.
