The big change to the programme came in the form of Ryan McCone. Ryan was a left-arm fast who played for Central Districts and Canterbury. Ryan brought an edge and a process to the 1st XI and his entry coincided with many of these boys leaving Craig Aitken’s tutelage and going into the 1st XI as Year 12s. Ryan and Keryn Ambler brought an amazing balance that got the absolute best out of these boys. Sitting over the top, they were lucky to have Andrew Levenger, a cricket nut who brought the whole 1st XI community together. It was fascinating to see the team slowly develop into such a force and the fact that it lost only one competitive match in 34 outings showed what could be achieved with like-minded people all on the same page with boys so enjoying being with their mates. Finally, the rain continued, and it looked like the Gillette match might be called off. Matt Lewis found a four- leaf clover and felt that boded well for the rest of the day. The phone rang, and we were informed that we had won the Gillette Cup. Prize-giving was in half an hour. Before we were presented the winner’s trophy, I learnt that Tim Seeto had been given tournament MVP with his 350-plus runs and the team was presented with the Spirit Award. That umpires’ trophy was presented to the team who showed the best cricket values and principles. It well reflected the team attitude.

Being polite and respecting the game of cricket and umpires was not always easy when under pressure, tired and wanting to achieve a goal. Winning this award showed the true character of a team who could maintain standards under extreme pressure. Nick Gibb was voted our MVP. Nick had to carry a heavy weight as captain, but he never complained and was always there to help. His brain ticked over every minute for six days and he was able to bring the team through to the title. So, we took the photos, and everyone left. It happened just like that. Five years came and went so very fast. 1ST XI CRICKET Manager: Andrew Levenger Coaches: Keryn Ambler, Ryan McCone Team: Nick Gibb (captain), Ben Breitmeyer (vice-captain), Josh Beaglehole, Jordan Braithwaite, Jack Brent, Will Bretherton, Ed Cochran, Jack Coles, Will Coombes, Charlie Eglinton, Hamish Falls- Anderson, Tom Harrison, Matt Hocquard, Ciaran Huntley, Matt Lewis, Rob McClean, Benji Nation, Nate Ovendale, George Ryan, Harry Sharr, Tim Seeto, Hunter Shore, Ollie Shore, Alex Stead As with the last few years, College’s season was divided into two distinct parts. In Term 1, the two-day games were played while in Term 4, all fixtures

were one-day matches. The team started the campaign in December with a defeat against The Willows and then a preseason in Wellington, including a defeat against Hutt International Boys’ School. The rest of the season proved to be remarkable, with the team unbeaten throughout, culminating in becoming national champion at the Gillette Cup in December. The team had been growing in confidence from Term 4 2021, when we beat the Christchurch Boys’ High School and St Andrew’s College 1st XIs for the first time in a long time. Tim Seeto and Nick Gibb both scored two centuries in the local competitions, with Tim scoring two and Nick one in the Gillette Cup finals. Matt Lewis was also particularly effective, with eight 50s. The wickets were shared, with Nick Gibb taking 41 and nine others taking 15 or more during the year.
