The final typified the term. Our fielding was superb against Ashburton College 1st XI, with seven catches taken behind the wickets in the slip cordon. Austin Smith took four wickets and we had Ashburton all out for 76 before the first drinks break. Jack Baker-Sherman batted through our innings and made telling partnerships with both James Kelly and Benji Nation to see us through to the total and the championship. power of being well-prepared, having a routine, blocking negative thoughts and focusing on all other aspects you could control. This approach set us up for a successful year. In Term 1, we won most of our matches, making the final against Sydenham. Sydenham had an excellent attack and used the conditions very well, having us in early trouble at 25 for 3. Ewan Whiteside and Louie Garry righted the ship before another flurry of wickets. The boys ended up with a respectable 197 all out off 50 overs. Extras top scored with 45 and Ben Campbell made 37 and Ewan Whiteside 30. Sydenham set about the chase for first innings points superbly and made it through to stumps on 165 for 3 off 48 overs. The College boys bowled and fielded well, so at no point did the run rate get out of hand, but Sydenham was patient and took full toll of anything loose. At the start of the second day, College needed seven wickets for under 32 runs to try and gain first innings supremacy. And we almost got there. Harry Flatman and Alf Markham each picked up three quick wickets, but not quite quickly enough. Sydenham was dismissed for 200, giving it a three-run lead. Harry Flatman ended with 3 for 16 off 10 and Alf Markham 3 for 13 off two overs. College started the second innings well and managed to get the score through to 63 for 1 before a collapse left us on 66 for 5. Our Euan McVicar/Ewan Whiteside double act resurrected the innings with a partnership of 121 (Ewan Whiteside 69, Euan McVicar 47). We ended up declaring on 196 for 8 off 42 overs, leaving Sydenham to chase 194 off 40 overs for victory. Both teams took to the challenge with vigour and Sydenham ended up taking the prize, getting the winning runs when seven down and with only four balls left in the day. Euan McVicar finished off a great day with 3 for 40. In Term 4, we also won most of our games, this time in the one-day format. A highlight of the term was

a convincing win over Christchurch Boys’ High School Blue. For the second week in a row, the Colts were taking on a CBHS side. Both teams had identical records (three wins, one loss), so a tight tussle was in store. Skipper Henry Hiatt won the toss, so elected to bat. Openers Henry Hiatt and Louie Garry got the team off to a fast start with the score on 35 off four overs, but a combination of excellent bowling and fielding from CBHS pegged us back and when we were on 74 for 4, we were teetering. An excellent partnership between Ewan Whiteside and Harry Smith – continuing his excellent form – got us going again. A late flurry of 44no by Euan McVicar took the team to 216 all out. This was probably a few runs short, especially considering we were bowled out with four overs to spare and there were two runouts. The defence of 216 got off to an excellent start and CBHS was 2 for 8 early. There was some tight bowling from Harry Flatman, Alf Markham, and Lachie Beirne. Fynn Harrington managed to snare a great boundary catch off the bowling of Louie Garry and this was the turning point of the match. Our other spinner, Ollie Young, set about his work and ripped through the middle order, eventually taking 4 for 25 off 10. Ollie was really well-supported by Ewan Whiteside, who finished with equally impressive figures of 3 for 8 off five, completing an excellent day’s work. CBHS was bowled out for 170. An excellent day’s cricket with the result in the balance for most of the day. In the closing stages of Term 4, we look forward to our trip to Hamilton for the Vettori Shield. On our return, we play CBHS Black for the final of the year, wrapping up a fantastic year of cricket for these boys. None of this could be possible without the excellent work of coach Michael Flatman, who was outstanding with our boys, always focusing on attitude and resilience ahead of result. My thanks also to the parents for their support and company, in particular Dave Hiatt, who helped out tirelessly with whatever needed to be done. To the boys, it has been an absolute

Following some crashing defeats the previous season, we felt that the boys could benefit from some help with resilience and teamwork. The six sessions focused on controlling what you could control, instead of obsessing over wickets and runs. This was also a mindshift for the parents as we could all be guilty of asking: ‘How many runs did you make?’ or ‘How many wickets did you take?’ The boys recognised this could be detrimental to their performance. Instead, they learnt the
