Team: Will Matheson (captain), Peter Beasley, Nikau Crosby, Noah Elkington, Felipe Felitti-Duter, Cameron Hill, Simon Lai, Finn Mayers, Arthur Meares, Nisal Pathirana, Moss Unverricht, Jago Wallace Our 9B Black suffered the perfect storm of illness, injury and bad weather to make for a disjointed second half of the year. When the players did manage to field a team on a fine day, it was rare to have a full complement of 11 fit young cricketers. Fearlessly led by the indomitable captain, Will Matheson, 9B Black still produced some great cricket with a fabulous team spirit of encouragement and mateship. Will was always able to rely on tight bowling from Jago Wallace, whose late in-swingers invariably kept the scoring low and led to some classy dismissals. One such dismissal was a spectacular one-handed diving catch at short mid-off by Noah Elkington that was worthy of ‘Plays of the Week’ on The Crowd Goes Wild , as was the celebration. Noah also supplied a safe pair of hands and appropriate verbals with gloves on behind the stumps. The best batting displays came from Felipe Felitti-Duter, who combined a good eye for line and length with elegant strokes to all parts of the field, together with some powerful thumps to the boundary. Team man Peter Beasley always contributed with his own in-swingers with ball in hand, and clearly enjoyed his cricket as much as he enjoyed being part of the team. Some of those who were fit and available ended the season combining with players from 9B White, and were able to enjoy some good cricket with new teammates. work they put in, ensuring that we have fields and facilities to train and play on. We also acknowledge the various sponsors of College cricket and, finally, the parents who have been our greatest and most loyal supporters. A special thank you to Rachel Teen and Imre Speizer for helping with the scoring and to Andrew Grace for assisting with managing and coaching the team on Saturdays. Thank you one and all. Twelve very keen and capable cricketers were selected after the camp in late January. Most boys had connections from their junior playing days in the Christchurch Junior Cricket Association, ensuring a fairly smooth transition into Year 9 cricket. There was plenty of disruption in Term 1, with rain affecting the first three scheduled matches, along with Covid-19, which was widespread in the school community in March. All our games were played on artifical pitches, which the batsmen enjoyed, while the bowlers had to work hard

to take wickets. There was a very familiar theme to Term 1, with four games against Christchurch Boys’ High School teams. The team came together well, remaining unbeaten in that period. When cricket resumed in Term 4, the boys knew every game would be a challenge after CBHS streamed their top players into three teams and other schools fielding strong sides in the 9A grade. The team enjoyed playing on grass for the first time and while the results did not always go our way, the boys showed great fighting spirit in every game. Batting throughout the year was spearheaded by Henry Murfitt and James Hunter, both good strikers of the ball. Murfitt scored just under 400 runs for the season, which included four half centuries, two of which were high scores of 96 and 99. Hunter scored just under 300 runs, with a highlight being his 70 not out off 56 balls against a strong St Andrew’s College team in November. The team included a strong bowling line-up, with Daniel Church standing out with his seam bowling, taking 16 wickets over the season at a healthy strike rate of 14. Jack Fletcher bowled well all season and added variation to the attack with his right arm off-spin. In the field, Charlie Redfern and Drew Edmundson stood out with their speed to the ball and strong throwing arms. Will Timms led the team by example, with both bat and ball, and really grew into the captain’s role as the season went on. All the boys improved their games through the year and with hard work should really kick on in 2023. Bowling with a consistent line and length, shot selection and strike rate with the bat are all areas that need improving. The boys enjoyed their cricket this year, they displayed great team spirit and should be proud of their conduct – on and off the field. The team was well-supported each week by a great group of parents. Tim Redfern Coach YEAR 9B BLACK CRICKET Manager: Malcolm Wallace Coach: Jack Hodgins
