LEADERSHIP Board Notes

The Board of Governors’ focus has continued to be the implementation and, where appropriate, refinement of the strategic plan, titled “Change & Continuity”, adopted in recent years, that will see us through to our 175th anniversary in 2025. During 2022, added attention has been directed to the welfare of the boys and those engaged at College, because of challenging national and international issues and uncertainties constantly in the media and conversation. These have included Covid-19, global warming, high inflation, job uncertainty, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Operationally, these issues have also had to be managed and the risks and their financial ramifications incorporated into our planning. Despite these challenges, student numbers have been sustained at the highest level ever – at just

under 700 – reflecting the demand created through the diversity of our offering and the programmes College provides. Significant initiatives in the year have included the implementation of the College Diploma, further community engagement initiatives, and significant financial commitment to College facilities with the start of construction of the new Upper West multifunctional sports centre, and the commitment to the Upper ground refurbishment following its completion. Philanthropy from our community has played an important role in these ventures and we are very appreciative of this support.

We have been fortunate to replace these experienced individuals with Murray Harrington and Oliver Hickman who bring their own skills and competencies for the benefit of College. The Board now comprises nine members, with Chair Hugh Lindo ably assisted by Deputy Jeremy Johnson, and Chair of the Finance Committee, Richard Rookes.

During the year, the Board farewelled two members – David Surveyor, the former

chair of the Finance Committee in July, and Trevor Burt,
