NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY AND TEAM RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS The 48th New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships and the 6th New Zealand Secondary Schools Regional Cross Country Team Relay Championships were held at the Saxton Field Sports Complex in Stoke, Nelson, 18–19 June. The individual Cross Country Championship was held on Saturday and the relay was on Sunday. College had seven boys attend this event and was supported by Jai Moss as one of the managers, who helped share driving and supervision duties. Luckily, the anticipated rain held. The weather was good, but the course was saturated after a week of rain prior, with plenty of mud and slush. This made conditions underfoot demanding, sapping the runners’ energy. There were a few withdrawals. All the boys had good races on both days, with the regional relay made up of five-person teams running 2km

While I was away on an Immerse & Inspire Adventurous Journey, Rob Clarke took the team. However, the flu hit College hard this week. With 16 boys entered, only three were fit enough to compete. The course was a demanding 1km loop, with hurdles. Thanks to Rob Clarke and William Blanchfield for all their support. over a 2x1km loop. It is an intense event, with the ground rumbling at the start of the larger races. The time difference between 40th to 50th, for instance, was only 31 seconds in the Year 9 event. Otto Church delivered great results on both days. He was 6th in the individual Year 9 event – 20 seconds behind 1st – with the time between 3rd and 10th only 11 seconds, and 3rd to 6th only seven seconds. Impressively, Otto was the first athlete in the South Island, and also anchored his Year 9 relay team on Sunday, with the fastest lap time securing the team’s 3rd place in the regional event. Jasper Moss defended his senior year title in a hotly contested race. He was challenged by two runners but dug deep with 800m to go and used his track experience to put a gap on his opposition, holding them out to take his 3rd national title in this event (two senior and one junior title).
