the lead swapping back and forth – 1–0, 1–1, 1–2, 2–2, 2–3. With just four minutes left, Gabriel Gallaway rescued College with a tidy finish to send the game to penalties. It was an even shootout, with both teams missing a penalty each, and College keeper Harry Dufton getting a hand on a couple but not quite stopping the shot. The NBHS keeper finally guessed right to save the 8th College penalty, giving the opposition the 7–6 win on penalties. A gutting way to end the week, but a performance that College should take pride in. Finishing 18th overall at the National Premier Tournament and as the top South Island school were great achievements. Overall, it was a very good season, with plenty of memorable moments. While not always clinical, the 2022 team members proved they were prepared to give it their all. With 10 of the tournament team not returning in 2023, it will definitely be a period of rebuilding. With some very talented young men in the squad, expectations were high from the start of the season. Training sessions

were fast-paced, with lots of skill on show as players pushed each other to perform well. It was clear from the early midweek games that the team was going to be competing at the top of the School Sports Canterbury Wednesday league, with initial scorelines of 7–0 against St Andrew’s College, 4–1 against Rangiora High School, 7–2 against St Thomas of Canterbury College and 9–0 against Burnside High School, pushing the team to the top of the table with a very healthy goal difference. Key to this early success were dominant performances by Lucas Gould, Nikau Davies, Ollie Young, and Ewan Whiteside, who all provided strong leadership – both on and off the field – to push the team to maintain high standards. Despite the one- sided scorelines, the team continued to play with solid structure and teamwork, rather than rely on one or two individuals. As the season went on, other teams in the league began to change their tactics against us, which negated a lot of our goal-scoring ability. Despite coming up against some very defensive tactics, the Junior XI still managed to find ways of winning, but with closer scorelines becoming more regular. As injuries and illness began to impact on the team in the regular season, they still managed to win every game until the final round, where they faced a strong Shirley Boys’ High School outfit. With several players out, SBHS managed to go 2–0 up early in the first half through some long balls that left the defence wanting. What followed was 60 minutes of College throwing everything at the SBHS team, who defended with all 11 players at times. College only managed one goal, giving the team its first defeat for the year. It seems that this may have impacted on the team, who had a similar game in the semi-finals a week later, losing 3–2 against Burnside High School, a team that College had dominated earlier in the season. A disappointing end to a season that promised so much, and a lesson for the boys to not take anything for granted. Following the season, the Junior XI

took part in a juniors tournament in Dunedin, where the boys came up against some of the best high school teams in the South Island. This was a much higher standard but the boys produced some strong results to make the semi-finals, where they played in the game of the tournament against Timaru Boys’ High School. This tightly contested affair was decided late, with TBHS scraping through. The Junior XI players should be very proud of their achievements at this tournament to make the semi-finals, considering the talented youngsters who took part. Dr Neil de Joux Manager

During this time, players played in a range of positions, with several different goal scorers, including George Kain, Jono Barnes, and Will Bretherton. The highlight of the grading games included an 11–0 win, with even goalkeeper Joe Pfahlert scoring. The first proper game of the season was away at St Bede’s College, and the boys produced my proudest game as a coach. After going 1–0 ahead through Jack Barr, Jack found himself on the receiving end of some off-the-ball actions that went unpunished by the referee before half-time. After starting the second half visibly shaken, College conceded a goal before lifting the tempo and going on to win 4–1, with Jack Barr rounding the goalkeeper for his second goal of the game, and Bruno Davies scoring again, having
