2ND XI HOCKEY Manager: Matt Thatcher Coaches: Llewey Heale, Lochlan Nicoll Team: Will Law (captain), Jake Abbiss, Loch Alexander, Finnian Chan-Allen, James Drury, Max Falvey, Henry Hiatt, Ohm Intoratat, Darcy Laidlaw, Will Morris, Benjamin Murphy, Jonathan Murphy, Will Pryor, Barnaby Stanton, Will Studholme, Jaspar Thomas, George van Leeuwen, Mitchell Young This year’s 2nd XI hockey side had a large change of players from the previous season, with plenty of fresh faces joining, along with a change at the helm with coach Llewey Heale taking over. The team was very lucky to have the opportunity to attend the Galletly Cup, a 2nd Xl tournament held during winter tournament week in Term 3. This was a driving focus for much of the season as we wanted to build a solid squad in preparation to perform well at the tournament. Throughout the season, we showed lots of promise as we built a well- rounded squad of young and experienced players and a great

amount of skill and ability, and began incorporating the style of play coach Llewey Heale wanted to see the team develop. It was a season made up of many tight games, which often came down to one goal. In many of them we had dominated much of the game with possession and attacking opportunities, but just could not find the back of the goal to tip the scores in our favour – so, unfortunately, we were on the losing side. However, the game plan and style that Llewey was looking to instil in the team was becoming more and more evident as time went by and the boys became more familiar with it and each other’s style. We could consistently see their skills and teamwork improving as well. We finished the season with two wins, five losses and one draw, and ended up in a playoff against Christchurch Boys’ High School 2nd XI. This was our final game before the tournament. We ended up playing the whole game without a goalie and won 3–2. In our pool at the Galletly Cup tournament, we drew with Tauranga Boys’ College, 2–2, and New Plymouth Boys’ High School, 1–1, and lost to both Palmerston North Boys’ High School, 7–0, and John

McGlashan College, 1–0. This put us in the playoff against St Bede’s College, which we narrowly lost, 1–0. We ended up in the 7th and 8th place playoff, where we faced Tauranga again and, this time, we came away as 5–1 victor. It was a great way to finish the tournament where we played some outstanding hockey and dominated facets of play, but just could not quite get the results that might have put us in a higher playoff. It was a great week away with the support of several parents. A big thank you to Llewey Heale, Andrew Levenger, and Lochlan Nicoll for their amazing support and effort as well. This season, we farewell Year 13 students Jake Abbiss, Will Law, Will Morris, Will Pryor, and George van Leeuwen, who all served College hockey and the 2nd XI with great ability. We appreciate all they did for the 2nd XI this season and wish them well in their future endeavours. A big thank you to the parents who supported the team week- in, week-out, braving cold and miserable nights at times. Also, a big thanks to Llewey Heale, who took on the coaching role and brought his knowledge, skills, energy and enthusiasm, and looked to help the boys improve and develop, as well as inspiring them to try to be the best player they could. Overall, we had some great success this season and saw plenty of development throughout and look forward to seeing those who return next season and those who progress to the 1st XI.
