3RD XI HOCKEY Manager: Warren Lidstone Coach: Keryn Ambler

Two games were won all season, and the team finished 7th, after being placed 6th in the round robin. While this sounded like a tough season, the boys were competitive for most parts of every game. Our loss to the top team, Papanui High School 1st XI, was typical. Good passing was seen in the first quarter, followed by a quarter of poor passing and five goals, followed by great defence in the final half. While being soundly defeated, there were good patches. Without doubt the highlight was our quarter-final match against Lincoln High School 1st XI. The team played tremendously against the 3rd-ranked team and we led by 1–0 for much of the match. This lead was deserved and a further goal or two could easily have been scored. However, a late goal against the run of play meant the match finished in a draw. To find a winner a penalty shootout occurred and we again led most of the way, but the final Lincoln goal, with 0.2 seconds remaining, resulted in the opposition going through to the semi-finals. We were incredibly close to a major upset, and while

we were all disappointed to lose, we knew the team had performed exceptionally well. All were pleased with the performance. Several players were selected to join the 2nd XI at their national tournament and they deserved their selections (Finnian Chan-Alan, Max Falvey, Henry Hiatt, Ohm Intoratat and Jaspar Thomas), while our Year 13 students (Richard Harnett, Bruce Chen, Yusef Elnahas and Christian Higgins) were influential in creating a positive team culture. Matthew Flint could be a goal, and William Owen did score his first goal. Alan Viles was a very hard worker, and Callum Gard at times showed silky skills, while Harry Vaughan was a strong passer. James Burt was always energetic and Seann Zhao defended well.

Team: Richard Harnett (captain), James Burt, Finnian Chan-Allan, Bruce Chen, Yusef Elnahas, Max Falvey, Matthew Flint, Callum Gard, Henry Hiatt, Christian Higgins, Ohm Intoratat, William Owen, Jaspar Thomas, Harry Vaughan, Alan Viles, Seann Zhao The 3rd XI was a team of great young men. When health, injury, Covid-19, holidays, exams, sickness, family functions and other activities made way for availability at training or games, much fun and determination was seen. Unfortunately, there was not one game the whole year when all the players were available. This made the season difficult in the sense of developing a team pattern of play. Charlie de Costobadie, Max Hardacre, and Loch Alexander were valuable additions throughout the season in assisting us to have full numbers, but also on their performances on the playing surface.
