not a successful tournament, the reality was that it was a young team coming up against teams that were mainly a year older or more. While still U15, the extra year level did make a difference. The boys played some good hockey and learnt a lot in terms of skills required and game understanding that would help them as players in the future. They also enjoyed the tournament experience on and off the field, taking away lasting memories – the benefits of being away as a team on a tournament. Many thanks to Kyle Houston and Tom Clarke for their inspirational and thorough preparation of the boys in training and their comments and support during the season. The boys would have gained much from their experience and tactical nous. I would also like to thank the parents for their support throughout the year – it was very much appreciated. Covid-19 obviously did not make it easy, with boys being away and late ring-ins being needed for some games. Despite this, I think the boys did really well throughout, adjusting to different personalities and positions.

We finished with four wins, three losses and two draws. This indicated an up-and-down season. However, the boys improved massively as a group, as well as individually. A few slip-ups against Cashmere 2nds and Mid Canterbury meant that we finished 3rd on the table. We won our quarter-final 5–2 against St Bede’s College but, unfortunately, got beaten again in the semi-final by Cashmere in a game where we played mostly with 10 players because of late absences. This meant our final game was for 3rd and 4th place against the Colts, which ended in a draw and went to a long and thrilling shootout. Our boys managed to come out on top, which was a great finish to a tough season. The boys improved immensely over the the season and should be extremely proud of themselves and each other. The Spirit of Hockey Award went to Thomas Currie for his enthusiasm and hard work throughout the season and for being such a great team player. The Most Improved Player Award went to Jamie Ireland. Everyone improved immensely, but comparing Jamie’s skills and mind for the game from start to finish was amazing and he should be very proud. The MVP Award went to Guy Roadley, which was well deserved. Guy gave it his all not only during the games but at training too. He was a great player but an even more outstanding leader. The support throughout the season was great and I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents, umpires, Canterbury hockey, Darrell and especially Monique for all the hard work that was put in to make sure the boys could train and play each week. Finally, I would like to say thank you to the boys for such a great season and good luck to those leaving at the end of the year. You were a pleasure to coach and unlucky not to come away from the season higher up on the podium. Josh Nelson Coach

We rarely put our best XI on the field, let alone had a top 16 for a match-day squad, but despite this there were moments of strong play, regular and clear progression from the players, and the team improved consistently through to the final match. James Melhuish finished the season as our top scorer, with Max Hardacre close behind following his regular forays from midfield. We were fortunate to have two exceptional goalkeepers in Loch Alexander and Marco Howe, so, defensively, we were solid, apart from against the top team in the division. Jonty Gray was an excellent captain and he, Charlie de Costobadie and Harrison Johnstone were strong in the centre of the defence. With Max and Arthur Meares running the midfield, we had the basis of a strong unit for the next few years in the club. The U15 Tanner Cup tournament was held in the July holidays at St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton. It was an opportunity for the team to compete against other schools from around the country.
