This event fell right in the middle of the alpine series, which most of these boys had been competing in every weekend. Skiing is for the committed. With this as their second sport, we must applaud their effort and dedication in getting up at dawn and travelling extreme distances while keeping on top of their studies. The boys enjoyed a day of free skiing on Saturday with fantastic weather. Cardrona was hosting the Monster Energy Jossi Wells Invitational, which featured competitors from around the world. Tim Tolerton rode the chairlift with Olympic champion Nico Porteous, and Seb Gray managed to chat with Nico at the end of the day.
Another 6am start on raceday meant the boys were up the mountain in great time for the briefing and to inspect the course. With perfect conditions, racers had two runs each down the track. Their scores were then combined to give a total score. College had one team racing and one individual. Seb Gray was our individual and raced the fastest time over the day to win, followed by Dom Botherway in 2nd and Tomas Coberger in 3rd. Josh Brown had a crash but recovered quickly to carry on. Tim Tolerton had two clean runs, which meant that College also won the teams’ event with Dom, Tomas, Tim and Josh. Most of the boys stayed on for the next two weeks in
Wanaka to finish the alpine racing points competition for the season. A special thanks to the parents of these boys who give up their weekends to travel kilometres to get to the snow and then volunteer for the day – Marcel Gray, Julian Brown, and Elle Coberger for all helping on the day.
