Given the nature of our sport, the waves are not always perfect on competition day at North New Brighton, but, whether it’s sloppy onshore chop, or high screamers, the boys always have a good time in the water. College has three keen surfers who regularly compete in competitions at the national level – Jack McKenzie, Tai McKenzie, and Archie Whithear. This year, Jack was awarded the first-ever surfing Colours at College. His achievements for 2022 are as follows: • 1st U18 Canterbury Scholastics Competition, Christchurch • 2nd U18 Member of Canterbury Scholastics Team at Nationals, Taranaki • 7th Open Men’s New Zealand Surf Nationals, Westport • 7th U18 South Island Surf Championships, Dunedin (National Event) • 5th U18 South Island Grom Series, Dunedin • 5th U18 South Island Grom Series, Christchurch Year 10 student Tai McKenzie also has a long list of successes for 2022. • 1st U14 Wednesday Surf League Competition
• 2nd U14 Canterbury Scholastics Competition, Christchurch • 3rd U14 Exit Canterbury Men’s Championships, Christchurch • 7th U14 New Zealand Surf Nationals, Westport • 7th U14 Billabong Grom Competition, Whangamata Year 11 student Archie Whithear also has a lot to be proud of in 2022. He was the youngest competitor to be invited to compete in the Single Fin Mingle (Sumner, Christchurch) and has taken part every year since age 14. Archie is also a Level 1 qualified surf instructor and works for Learn to Surf Sumner. • 1st Tuawera Longboard Event, Christchurch • 2nd U20 Nationals Longboard Competition • 3rd Open Men’s South Island Championships
Our sport is not all about competing and winning, as we have plenty of boys who just love getting in the water and sharing the stoke. A special mention to Murphy Dargue who braved the cold water in October (when the snow was still melting off the Alps) without a wetsuit. Our most improved surfer this year has to be Noah Goodfellow, who in a matter of weeks, has learnt to reliably pop up. Last, a massive thanks goes to the parents, namely Kim Goodfellow and Louie McKenzie, who willingly help the boys get to the beach and who judge the Wednesday competition.
