It was great to see the younger members of the A squad grow, develop and succeed throughout the year. The highlight of the year came from two individual performances, with Lucas Evans winning the 2022 Canterbury Open and Jack Hansen- Ratter winning the New Zealand U14 Junior Masters. The greatest disappointment was the cancellation of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Tournament, with the country affected by Covid-19 via the Omicron variant and being in the traffic light system. Unfortunately, this was the second time in three years that a competitive College side missed out on playing nationals. College had a successful outing at the annual Canterbury Secondary School Tennis Championships held from 15–16 February at Trustpower Wilding Park in Christchurch. At a tournament that hosts great tennis players from across Canterbury, College assembled a competitive squad, capable of performing at the level required to reach the latter stages of the tournament. This year, six senior boys were selected to compete in two divisions. Year 13 student Jasper Johnson, and
Year 12 students Liam Barrett, Lucca Wiseman, and George Brakenridge competed in the Year 12/13 men’s division; and Year 11 students Lucas Evans and Franklin Barry represented College in the Year 11 men’s division. On the opening day, most of our players gained major victories, cruising into the quarter-final and semi-final rounds. However, following his massive 4–0 4–0 first- round victory, George Brakenridge was unlucky to draw the top-seeded player in the quarter-finals, with an early knockout in the Year 12/13 men’s division. Likewise, Jasper Johnson also had an early knockout in the quarter-finals by Lucca Wiseman, dropping Jasper to the consolation division. Day two featured some high-quality games. In the semi-finals of the Year 11 men’s division, Franklin Barry fought hard to impose himself on the match, but was ultimately knocked out. Lucas Evans played a
gruelling 94-minute match against an opponent who seemed to be in good form. Unfortunately, the match ended 6–4, 2–6, 10–6 in his opponent’s favour. Lucas Evans and Franklin Barry gained 3rd and 4th place, respectively, in the singles, and the pair dominated the doubles competition, winning by an
outstanding 24–2 games. Despite suffering an early
knockout on opening day, Jasper Johnson managed to bounce back, harassing his opponents in his service game and with thunderous forehands down the line. Jasper won the consolation final, 4–0, 4–2, and reached the Year 12/13 men’s doubles finals with George Brakenridge. The Year 12/13 men’s singles semi- finals featured a difficult match-up between Lucca Wiseman and the top seed, Duncan Mccall. The 83-minute marathon ended in a 6–2, 6–0 defeat, only for Lucca to play another exhilarating 100-minute showdown
