While we maintained good numbers – with more than 100 boys choosing to play this season – because of Covid-19 being rife in the community, we opted to play most teams in an in-house competition between College teams in our gym. This made the best of a bad situation, and allowed the boys to still have fun, and some good competition, but without the risks associated with being out in the community. Five senior social teams battled it out over five weeks, with Senior Pink taking the coveted winner’s title. Three junior teams
also learnt the basics in game situations under the guidance of senior players during their training. Despite disruptions, the Senior A, Senior B and Junior A teams still began the year playing in the CSS competition. After some good games, unfortunately this competition was brought to an early finish thanks to Covid-19. Luckily, prior to this, the Senior A team was able to compete in the Mainland Senior Volleyball Championships at Pioneer Stadium. After coming up against some tough competition from the best teams in the south, we finished 9th after coming out on top in a tough five-set battle against a polished Riccarton side. Unfortunately, this event was later deemed a super spreader, with boys and staff testing positive in the following days. In Term 4, the Senior A team also played in the rescheduled Canterbury Senior Secondary School Championships, and finished a respectable 6th after some close-fought matches against several higher-placing teams.
