SENIOR WATER POLO MiC/Manager: Neil Nicholson Coaches: Hamish Sullivan, Lionel Randall Team: Jacob Clements (captain), Sam Chittock, James Drury, Guy Greening, Jackson Hart, Mun Chi Jager, Alex Johnston, Finlay McCullough, Louis McKeon, Tom Thyne, George Wilson The start of the season was a busy few weeks for the boys in the senior squad, with wins over both Shirley Boys’ High School and St Andrew’s College. Coaches Hamish Sullivan and Lionel Randall rotated boys throughout the games, and this allowed us to blood as many players as possible to get crucial game time leading up to the South Island Secondary Schools competition. The squad led by Jacob Clements played well and had been working better and better together every game. However, we eventually were struck by the dreaded Covid-19 and had to make the decision to default our game against St Bede’s College. The coaches and I were reluctant to put our junior players into the pool against a very experienced and older St Bede’s team. While this year’s games are more of a friendly nature, given the decision by Canterbury Water Polo and School Sport New Zealand, there really is no such thing as a non-competition game when boys are involved. Unfortunately, the decision to cancel the South Island Secondary Schools competition for the second year in a row was a painful blow to the senior students. The season was then cut short and eventually abandoned as Covid-19 took hold and devastated teams throughout the contributing Canterbury schools.
Term 4 came around quickly and we were lucky enough to again field two teams. The B Bombers, under Logan Bell, fought really hard every Wednesday night and, despite some grave scorelines, eventually came together as a team, finishing with a one-win four-loss record. Sam Pye and Mitchell Lewis really stepped up and played very well for this team, along with the effervescent Teddy Hailey. The A team had a harder competition and managed to start well with big wins before coming up against harder opposition in St Bede’s and Burnside High School. We managed to finish a credible 4th place in the local Canterbury competition. The focus was the South Island Junior Secondary Schools competition, when Lionel Randall and Logan Ball took charge of the boys and they played a gruelling schedule, winning against Shirley Boys’ High School and St Andrew’s College, before drawing the two top-seeded teams in St Bede’s and Marlborough Boys’ College. At the end of the tournament, we
placed a credible 4th in the South Island, after losing narrowly to Burnside. Thanks must go to Logan Ball and Lionel Randall for all their work.
