Rogers Bar HR | Spring Turn Out Sale | February 24, 2024

Dear Cattlemen, I would like to welcome you to Rogers Bar HR. We have been raising Charolais since 1959, emphasizing important economic traits. The traits of calving ease, high weaning weights, and ease of keeping are always in the front of our minds when we are breeding and developing our cattle. But, the most important thing that we have done, has been to develop these traits on GRASS. Our bulls will not fall apart when you turn them out. Even though we have developed our herd on grass, they excel when placed on feed tests or in the feedlots. We have won more BIF tests than any other Charolais breeder in the nation! When you use a Rogers Charolais bull, you will have heavier calves at weaning and thus more money in your pocket. We send bulls representing all of our bloodlines to be tested on rate of gain tests. The results tell us that our entire herd is moving in the right direction! Our herd is not one that we bought and then tried to adapt to the Southeast. Our herd was developed over the last half century on the rolling hills of southeast Mississippi, and after 65 years, we feel that we have developed the best herd of Charolais in the Southeast and the United States. Our calves are not creep fed. They make it on their mother’s milk and the grass we have. Our ranch is located 90 miles from the Gulf in the hot, humid environment of the South, so you do not have to worry about them melting on you like a snow cone. Our selling philosophy is that we want to sell you a bull not only today, but also when you replace him. The only way we can sell you bulls in the future is by selling you a good bull today. That was one of the best lessons my father ever taught me. Our goal is to produce cattle that will put the most pounds on the quickest and the most efficiently… and we have been doing just that! Our cattle gain well on feed, but also on grass. More pounds at weaning means more money in your pocket! Every pound counts toward your bottom line, and it is important for you to focus on getting more pounds on your calves. A Rogers Bar HR bull will do just that. Charolais bulls as a whole will add more pounds at weaning, and Rogers Bar HR Charolais bulls have proven time and time again to be the best weight gaining Charolais in the United States. We have won more rate of gain tests than any other Charolais Breeder. We are the only breeder of any breed to win the Florida Bull Test three years in a row. The one thing we are most proud of is that the winners have not been from just one blood line, but from all of our blood lines. This tells us that all of our herd is moving in the right direction. We stand behind our bulls and their calves. We do this by our willingness to purchase your calves out of our bulls. If you have 1 or a 1,000, we want to buy them. Please give us a call when you want to sell them. If you need help selecting a bull, or if you have any questions, please give me a call at (601) 765-7751. We want to sell you a bull not only today, but also tomorrow and the only way we can do that is by giving you a good product and treating you right. So, if you have a question or need any help give us a call. Yours for Better Charolais,

Doug Rogers

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW acc) Actual weight measurement at birth.

Carcass weight (CW EPD) Expected progeny differences for Carcass Weight is a predictor of pounds of retail product at a constant age endpoint. Selection for increased values should result in heavier carcasses, while selection for decreased values should result in lighter carcass weights at the same age endpoint. Carcass weights EPD is expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weights between parent’s progeny at an age constant endpoint. Ribeye area (REA EPD) Ribeye area is a major component of the USDA yield grade equation and selection for increased ribeye area should result in large ribeyes and lower yield grades between animals with the same carcass weight. Ribeye area has a positive relationship with weight, the larger the animal, the larger the ribeye area. Ribeye Area EPD is expressed in square inches and is a predictor of differences in ribeye area between parent’s progeny at a constatnt age point. Fat thickness (fat EPD) Fat thickness is the primary component of the USDA Yield Grade equation. Fat thickness has a negative relationship to cutability; therefore, selection based on decreased fat thickness should result in lower yield grades and leaner cattle given the same age endpoint. Fat EPD is expressed in inches and is a predictor of differences in fat thickness between parent’s progeny at an age constant endpoint. Marbling score (Marb EPD) Marbling Score EPD is a prediction of the differences in the USDA subjective marbling score. Marbling is a subjective measure of the amount of intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Terminal sire index (TSI) The Terminal Sire Index is a formal method of combining EPDs - BW, WW, YW, REA, CW, MARB, and FAT - into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data. The TSI represents a dollar index per terminal progeny produced for a bull, ranking them for profit potential. This dollar index is to be interpreted much like a single trait EPD. For example, if Sire A’s index is $191.66 and Sire B’s index is $200.00, then we would expect Sire B’s offspring to average $8.34 more net return than Sire A’s offspring.

Scrotal Circumference (SC acc) Actual scrotal circumference measurement (in centimeters).

Birth Weight EPD (Bw Epd) The expected difference in average birth weight (pounds) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW epd) The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genetic influence on pre-weaning growth rate.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW epd) The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. The evaluation reflects genetic influence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate.

Milk EPD The genetic ability of a sire’s or dam’s daughters to express in pounds of weaning weight in her calves due to her maternal ability through mothering instinct and milk.

Total maternal EPD (tm epd) A value to predict the weaning weight performance of calves from an animal’s daughters due to genetics for growth and maternal ability. Total Maternal is calculated by adding 1/2 the WW EPD to the Milk EPD. Scrotal circumference epd (SC EPD) The expected difference in scrotal circumference (expressed in centimeters) of a bull’s or dam’s male offspring at yearling compared to progeny of all other animals evaluated. Research has also indicated a relationship between increased SC EPD and decreased age at puberty for daughters.

What’s A Bull Worth?

Cowman Formula

Increase in pounds per calf from a top-performance bull X Number of cows bred to him per year X Number of years to keep the bull X Expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull EXAMPLE : A bull who will add 30 lbs. to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and you sell the calves for $2.30 per pound. 30 lbs. X 25 cows = 750 lbs. 750 lbs. X 4 years = 3,000 lbs. 3,000 lbs. X $ 2.30 = $6,900 This bull is worth $6,900 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not consider the increase in value due to calving-ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain, and improved carcass quality.
