The Key to Preventing Employee Burnout
When you’re working hard, it can be easy to forget how hard your employees are also working. Your team is the center of your landscaping business, and the last thing you want is for them to experience burnout and leave you hanging during your busiest time of year. Landscapers often must work in harsh, rainy, cold, or blisteringly hot conditions. Sometimes, this means they can start feeling burnt out just when the main busy seasons begin. If you don’t have managers to check in on your team, you might miss signs of burnout and walkouts. The key to preventing this is consistent communication with your employees so you can spot the gaps and fill them before it’s too late. One way to do this is through an employee text messaging system. You can send out Employee Net Promoter Score Surveys (ENPS)! These surveys provide questions on employee satisfaction and give you the results on who needs more uplifting. Whether it’s in- person or via text or email, it’s simply vital that you keep this line of communication open and collect feedback from your staff. Aside from messaging and check-ins, you should also create opportunities for your team to connect, which can be done through staff events. You probably already know Ramblin Jackson is big on
team events like hosting barbecues, breakfasts, and bowling get-togethers.
Trust us, we’ve heard all the pushback we can about this. Many owners think these events won’t help, but the truth is, it won’t if your company and staff are already in a bad place. For a company in good shape, it boosts employee retention and keeps you fully staffed all year.
If you don’t believe us, listen to Nick Klotz from EPM Professional Ground Services, who has a 95% employee retention rate. When I asked him if these team events were expensive, he replied, “I mean, it is the cheapest event we do. We actually use bowling annually, and the way we do our events is we usually try to have 3–4 per year.” And to him, it’s most definitely worth it: “Hands down! Everybody’s always smiling. Everybody’s always laughing … I attribute a lot to the positive attitude we have around here.” If you’re unsure how to get started, our team can help you open these lines of communication and keep your staff satisfied and ready for the spring season.
